Have you ever left a leadership development training feeling like it barely scratched the surface of what you needed?

Or, that too much time was spent on competencies you’ve never had an issue with?

You might have even had your concerns as a leader brushed aside or dismissed with comments such as, delegate that to your team, speak up more in meetings, brag more, or communicate clearly but don’t be too direct.

All this without any guidance on how to navigate the bias, the double-standards, and the identity issues that emerge when we are asked to change our patterns of thought and behavior.

The root of the problem is most leadership development training was not designed for women and fails to take women’s specific brain functions, societal conditioning or obstacles into consideration.

In this episode we’re covering why leadership development for women is so important and why it needs to change.

As a leader, are you looking to develop any of the following between yourself and others in your organization: more trust, stronger relationships, buy-in, and commitment? How about executive presence, that X-factor that has others stop and take notice? 

There are a couple of not-so-soft skills, that when applied in combination, will have those around seeing you in a whole new light and admiring you as a leader.

These skills are: directing your full attention and listening deeply. It sounds really easy, and it can be once you’ve developed these skills and made them a habit. Unfortunately, most of us think we are better at these skills than we actually are and if you want the benefits, you need to take an honest look at how you’re doing.

How are you at delivering unwelcome news to one of your team members, and then coaching them through the feedback?

Sometimes as leaders we have to tell a team member that they are off-track or that they’re not going to get what they want.

It’s not the best part of a leader’s job, but in these conversations are opportunities for growth and development. Not just for our team member, these conversations are great for our growth and development as a leader as well.

Are you leading by example?

This is a trick question because the reality is you are always leading by example. The question is whether you want the people you lead to do what you are doing.

Like it or not, people are watching what you're doing and they're listening closely to what you're saying. And, the higher you go up the leadership chain the bigger an example you become. There's a saying when you reach senior leadership, you are whispering from a megaphone.

Your people are watching you closely to determine what is acceptable behavior and attitudes, and what is not. The question is, are you exemplifying the behavior that you would like to see in the people that you lead? Are your actions consistent with your message?

Leading by example may not always be easy but it’s a must if you want the best chance of hitting your goals and having harmony in the workplace.

In this episode we’re covering what it means to lead by example and how to gauge how effectively you are modeling the behavior you want to see.

As with the last episode of Women Taking the Lead I’m asking, for your career, who do you go to for help and support?

Help comes in many forms and from a variety of sources. Some help you can get for free and some help costs money.

While I always recommend utilizing your free help when appropriate, and for as many things as you can, it’s important to know that free resources will only get you so far.

We can get stuck in our careers or with a situation at work because we keep going back to the people in our lives whom will offer their help for free, but who don’t have the expertise to guide us through our challenges effectively.

Knowing whom you can go to for what will save you time and energy, and not put any undue pressure on those in your support system who want to help, but can’t give you what you need.

This episode will cover the types of career helpers you want to pay for, and how to utilize those people.

For your career, who do you go to for help and support?

Help comes in many forms and from various sources. Some help you can get for free and some will cost money.

I recommend utilizing the free resources when appropriate and for as many things as you can. And, it’s important to know that free resources may only get you so far depending on what your goals and challenges are.

I’ve seen many women get stuck in their career or with a situation at work because they keep going back to the people in their life who will offer their help for free, but who don’t have the expertise to guide this woman through her challenge effectively.

How are you doing getting regular physical activity into your weekly routine?

No judgement here. When there’s a lot going on it’s easy to free up time by skipping the workout, walk or bike you had already planned.

In an emergency this is a logical move, but how often it is vital to skip the workout to handle a true emergency?

Physical activity is not neutral. There are either benefits to getting in some activity or there are consequences for not being active. These consequences effect you mentally as well as physically.

Given that, it is vital that you get regular movement in. And, you don’t need a gym membership or do intense workouts to be physically active.

This episode is building on the last episode on mental and emotional wellness and making the case for exercise as a leadership development practice.

Perhaps never before has the focus of mental and emotional wellness been at the forefront of leadership. 

According to the Harvard Business Review, “mental health challenges are now the norm among employees across all organizational levels.” In 2021, during a follow-up study to their 2019 Mental Health at Work Report, seventy-six percent of respondents reported at least one symptom of a mental health condition in the past year, up from 59% in 2019. 

The pandemic impacted every area of people’s lives, and has been a leading factor in an increase of mental health concerns. And it is not behind us yet.

Taking care of yourself is vital: if you are depleted your health, work, and ability to support others will suffer.

This episode explores why, as a leader, taking care of your mental and emotional wellness, and supporting your team to do so as well, is critical.

Too many of us are not taking time off, despite the added stress caused by the pandemic (and the blurred lines between work and home).

What if we shifted our perception of what it means to take time off?

Instead of viewing down time as laziness or a failure, what if we saw time off as an investment in ourselves? It’s about valuing yourself enough to make that investment in yourself and modeling that behavior for others.

This episode is making the case for taking time off and why taking that much-needed break will yield big returns.

What does “asking for help” mean to you?

  • Do you avoid it at all cost because asking would mean exposing yourself to judgment?
  • Maybe you see the importance and ask for help on occasion, but it’s uncomfortable.
