Did you know women represent only 33% of employees in the Tech industry?
And according to Accenture half of women who go into the tech industry drop out by the age of 35.
Knowing those stats, it’s great when you hear of a company that is beating those odds. I wanted to know what is making the difference, so I’ve invited Laura Baldwin, the President of O’Reilly Media to share what they are doing at O’Reilly with all of us.
Laura Baldwin began working with O’Reilly Media in October 2001 as Chief Financial Officer and added Chief Operating Officer to her responsibilities before becoming O’Reilly’s first President in March 2011. Prior to O’Reilly, she consulted for the publishing industry with BMR Associates, managing diverse large projects. Her media career started at Chronicle Books, where she was CFO for ten years, contributing to its successful distribution and gift business launch. Laura’s diverse experience in banking, corporate governance, and media fuels her passion for the industry. She credits her leadership ethos to her all-girls high school, where she was taught that leadership is available to anyone who demonstrates initiative and drive regardless of their gender. At O’Reilly, she helped to create a diversity scholarship program and continues to advocate for an inclusive and open workforce.
· O'Reilly's executive team stat (45% women) and companywide stat of 43% women
· When O’Reilly realized there was a discrepancy in their company, and something needed to change.
· What they are doing differently, which has allowed them to sustainably achieve these numbers.
· O’Reilly’s current focus to help their people continue to have flexibility and manageable workloads.

Why do we sometimes struggle to achieve certain goals, while others that are even more challenging are accomplished without much difficulty or stress?
Any goal designed to create change or transformation takes commitment. And your commitment level - to do what it takes to achieve the goal - determines your experience as you work toward that goal.
Why is that?
In this episode we’re exploring why a 100% commitment to your goal makes achieving the goal easier and dare I say much more enjoyable.

What does it truly mean to have a psychologically safe workplace and why do so many organizations struggle to create psychologically safe environments?
According to research released last fall by Wiley, only 53% of individual contributors and 55% of supervisors say they feel safe taking risks at their organizations. Risk taking is a required component of creativity, problem solving, and innovation. A low threshold for risk can be concerning depending on the requirements of the job or the industry one is in.
In this episode of Women Taking the Lead, we delve into the concept of psychological safety, its profound impact on team performance, the essential behaviors for creating psychological safety, and strategies to overcome challenges.

Is finding the right talent a challenge for you?
This is a topic that frequently comes up in my coaching and consulting conversations.
Regardless of the size of the company or industry, there is a fear (or realized reality) that the people with the skills and experience needed for a particular position is nearly impossible to find.
But is that a "Capital T Truth"?
In this episode, I’m joined by Leanne Rodd of FlexProfessionals to discuss creative solutions to the talent challenge.
Whether you are an individual who needs a part-time work schedule or a hiring manager struggling to find the right-fit new hire, this episode is going to get you thinking.

If you could have more time or more energy, which would you choose?
I’m going to get bold and make the case that many of your challenges would be overcome if you had more energy.
If you’re like me trying to control time, you take things off your schedule only to find other things have filled that briefly open space. As a result of your effort, you still don’t have any extra time. What you’ve got is a new routine.
In this episode I’m laying out why you are better served by finding the best ways to renew your energy, rather than looking for more time.

Most people, without training and mindset work, are uncomfortable giving others feedback. Without training and mindset work, giving feedback is perceived as a hard conversation. This is largely because of uncertainty of how the receiver is going to respond to the feedback.
The fear is that the receiver will at minimum take offense and withdraw. They could also become defensive and lash out.
I think we can all admit that there have been times when we avoided giving feedback for this reason. We’ve avoided giving feedback to protect ourselves, even though it would give the other person an opportunity to change their behavior and increase their chances of positive outcomes.
On the other side of that equation, when we don’t get quality feedback it leaves us with a gap in knowledge and unable to even consider making changes.
Trust answers the basic question, can I rely on you? How much trust someone has in you is in relationship to the level to which they believe you can be relied upon.
In this episode I’m sharing five things that will cause people to lose trust in you.
Have you come face-to-face with any of the prevailing myths about women in the workplace?
Last month I interviewed Analiza Wolf, the author of The Myths of Success: A Woman of Color's Guide to Leadership. Analiza’s book, and our conversation, focused on the myths we women, buy into that hinder our growth as leaders.
Not too long ago, I was listening to an episode on The McKinsey Podcast, produced by McKinsey & Company. The episode was titled Busting myths about women in the workplace.
Interesting. Not myths that we women hold about ourselves. Rather, the myths that are held about women in the workplace in general.
Then recently I came across an article by Gallup titled The Path to Gender Parity in Leadership, published March 8, 2024. This article complimented and added to the information shared on The McKinsey Podcast. I found the topic of myths about women all so fascinating that I wanted to share it with you.

I'm going to get a bit vulnerable here and be transparent that on the Women Taking the Lead podcast I have not given a lot of time to the topic of pay equity. Part of it is because I'm typically not working with women around the areas of negotiating salary. That may come up when a client of mine is being offered a promotion but typically, I'm not dealing with the issue of disparities in pay.
And what my guest is going to really underscore for us today is pay equity is not something that comes about because women have good negotiating skills. I know, shocker. Because that's what we've been led to believe for a long time now. If only women would develop certain skills, there wouldn't be so much inequity.
My guest Emily Aries is calling BS on that.
Emilie Aries is a speaker, podcaster, author, and the Founder & CEO of Bossed Up, an award-winning leadership development and career services company committed to closing the gender leadership gap.
Aries has worked with leaders at Fortune 500 companies to support retention, diversity and inclusion, and human resource initiatives, and has been featured in media outlets including the Washington Post, CNN Money, Buzzfeed, and more.

Hello and welcome to Women Taking the Lead. I’m going to start us off by reading a quote I read not too long ago of my guest today.
“As leaders in an increasingly polarized society, it's crucial that we recognize the talent within our organizations. Incredible talents are often overlooked, underutilized, or placed in situations that are bound to fail. The consequence of this is stagnant teams and underperforming businesses because our people feel disconnected. However, it's not the people who are broken; it's our organizational systems that require fixing.”
That is a bold statement made by Dr. Mary-Clare Race, the President of Talking Talent.

There are a lot of myths out there about what you need to do to be successful at work.
You may already be at a point in your career where you’ve realized this and had to shift gears.
And you may still feel like you are walking a tight rope of, for instance, needing to be more decisive but not too decisive because that can work against you as a woman. Or, advocating for yourself more but not too much because that also has consequences.
On this episode of Women Taking the Lead I’m joined by Analiza Quiroz Wolf to talk about the strategies and practices that will actually lead you to success in the workplace.
· How her own story influenced the need to debunk the myths of success and the research and experiences that went into it.
· How our strategies for success often come from those who want the best for us but those strategies don’t always translate into success at work.
· The notion that you will be seen, acknowledged and rewarded by focusing on your responsibilities and working hard.
· How growing your influence is about developing relationships with others and again doesn’t involve a lot of hard work.
· Letting go of leadership stereotypes so your own strengths as a leader can emerge.

Would you describe yourself as being self-aware?
Most people do. But according to research done by organizational psychologist Tasha Eurich and her team involving 5000 participants, it may be that only 10%-15% of the population is actually self-aware.
Additionally, they found that when someone considers themselves to be highly experienced, that estimation may keep them from questioning their assumptions, seeking evidence that goes against their own position, or continuing to learn. This played out in more experienced managers overestimating their leadership effectiveness as compared to newer managers.
In the last episode we covered how to lead with emotional intelligence, and benefits of utilizing empathy in your leadership.
In this episode we will expand on two of the five components of emotional intelligence: self-awareness and self-regulation. Additionally, you get a few suggestions on how to develop these abilities, so you feel more confident and creative in your role.

Have you ever been in a situation where you felt like you couldn't fully be yourself?
Maybe you hesitated to share an idea, express an opinion, never mind present an opposing view. Or maybe felt like you didn't belong?
And as a leader, have you ever been made aware of an employee having this experience at work?
I have Pasha Marlowe joining me to discuss the profound importance of psychological safety and belonging.
Pasha Marlowe (she/they) has 30 years of experience as a marriage and family therapist and neurodiversity coach. She specializes in the intersection of neurodiversity, disability, and LGBTQIA+. Pasha speaks to organizations and ERGs about neurodiversity-affirming practices, psychological safety, and neurobelonging. She encourages leaders to have a lens of inclusion and intersectionality to allow all, including those with the most marginalized identities, to be seen and heard.

Have you ever wondered why some teams do okay while others effortlessly tackle challenges?
The secret lies in one word: TRUST. In fast-paced environments, team cohesion is more crucial. A cohesive team, built on trust, can leverage diverse skills, tools, and resources to conquer any obstacle.
Building and maintaining trust is not a one-and-done exercise. Everything you do is either growing, maintaining, or diminishing the level of trust on your team.
This episode explores the role of team trust and how it can transform your team dynamics. I'm covering the key benefits of team trust, the obstacles that destroy trust - or at the very least prevent it from growing, and how you can build trust on your team if trust is low.

Are you at a loss for how you can actively support and empower women of color to thrive in leadership?
I often look at reports showing the current numbers of people in all levels of leadership. And, regardless of the level of leadership, the industry, etc., women of color are in the lowest percentiles.
This conversation with Rebecca Muriuki explores positioning yourself for a leadership promotion as a woman of color. We discuss the challenges women of color navigate, and how we can all be part of the diversity change that we want to see in corporate leadership.
This conversation will give you practical tips to create environments for women of color to feel a sense of belonging in their current teams, while also helping them feel empowered in their career ambitions.
· Rebecca’s path to advancement as a woman of color.
· Implementing strategies for creating inclusive workplace environments.
· Navigating the unique challenges and opportunities faced by women of color in leadership.
· Fostering leadership skills that empower managers to advance their careers and drive positive change in their organizations.
· The #1 mistake to avoid when reducing barriers to leadership opportunities to have more diversity in leadership.

Do you have a strong leadership style that has been mislabeled as harsh or uncaring?
Every now and again, as I’m connecting with each of you on LinkedIn, I’ll ask if you have any topic suggestions for the podcast. I recently got a response that immediately piqued my interest.
The response read, “One thing I struggle with as a leader is gender stereotypes and expectations on how a female leader needs to act. People assume female leaders need to always be nurturing and soft, and when they need to be direct or decisive people find that harsh. If you have a podcast that addresses this issue and how to overcome it, I would love to listen.”

Have you ever received a promotion in which your manager becomes your peer?
If you have you know it’s a big transition on top of an already big transition. The intensity of the change in relationship will depend on the relationship you already had with your former manager, but even in the best circumstances it will be a little unsettling. Especially if you have differing opinions in a management meeting.
I have Liz Johnson with me for a coaching episode of the podcast today and this is one of the things we’re discussing. Let me tell you about Liz.
Liz Johnson is the VP of Research and Development for a private, mid-sized biopolymer company located in the upper Mid-West of the United States. She holds a BA in Chemistry and a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering specializing in implantable polymeric biomaterials. She grew up on the East Coast, studied in the Mid-West and West Coast. She is now back in the Mid-West where she lives with her husband, 3 kids and 2 dogs. Liz’s passion is bringing people, process, and technology together to launch great products.
