Hello everyone and thank you for joining me!

I have to acknowledge right off the bat that Women Taking the Lead’s 2nd Anniversary came and went and I didn’t do anything to acknowledge it publicly.

Even though I had started to make plans and got some suggestions from The Accomplished Community and my team, last week and the weekend turned out to be incredibly hectic and March 25th came and went and not a peep from me.

So let’s pretend I’m hosting a celebration to mark this achievement. If you were wondering what to bring as a gift I would say, just share this podcast with a woman in your life who you know would enjoy and get value from it. Let’s include her in this celebration.

And what I’m giving away as party favors is a 20 minute call with me. This is an opportunity for us to chat and you can ask any questions you like. Shoot me an email at Jodi@womentakingthelead.com. Put “Party favor” as the subject line and I’ll send you the link to get on my calendar. I can’t wait to chat with you!

Let’s make this an amazing celebration marking 2 years of Women Taking the Lead.

Well, I got a GREAT reaction to the last 100% Jodi episode. That episode was all about getting started on a big goal so I want to continue along this path.

Now that you have in your tool box a trick to break down an overwhelming goal into manageable baby steps I want to talk about keeping up momentum.

We’ve all experienced this before. We get a vision of what could be, what we want to achieve. We get emotionally involved and can begin feeling what it would feel like to achieve that goal. We become excited by the prospect and decide to go for it.

And then the work toward the goal begins. We start with a lot of enthusiasm and that gets us through any initial preparation or adjustments we need to make to our schedule. We start and within a matter of time – it could be days or weeks – we notice life is throwing us some major curve balls.

Something unexpected always pops up when you have a big goal.

It may then feel like it is taking a force of will to stay committed to the goal. Depending on your mental preparation or the support system you have around you, you may pull through or you may wind up feeling defeated.

This is why many people give up before they’ve reached their goal. They were not mentally, physically, emotionally or spiritually prepared to deal with the obstacles that would come at them.

We have been hearing a lot about the need to pay attention to the food we eat. Our physical health is largely determined by the foods and drinks we put into our bodies and the products we put in our hair and on our skin.

If you are avoiding processed foods, consuming whole foods in moderation that are organic and toxin-free, and you make a point to get in physical activities that raise your heart rate and cause you to break a sweat, you are fortifying yourself against most obstacles that would impact your physical health. You will be less likely to get sidelined by whatever illness is going around and taking down those around you.

However, what we don’t think about are the things we consume every day that are impacting our mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. And even if your big goal is something like a triathlon, a marathon or a Spartan, it takes more mental and emotional endurance than physical endurance to cross the finish line.

Jen Hecht has an extensive background in both sales and marketing since graduating from Coastal Carolina University.  This experience was crucial in creating The Dating Advisory Board. Jen envisioned bringing business principles that she has learned over the years and apply those strategies in the dating world. Jen has always leaned on her “advisory boards” in business and now bringing that mindset into the dating world. The Dating Advisory Board takes real-world business practices and discusses how those principles can be crafted into a dating strategy.

Click to tweet: .@jenhecht1 is sharing her story on Women Taking the Lead https://womentakingthelead.com/208 #inspiration

Playing Small Moment

Even at a young age, Jen would doubt herself. She would have friends and family members try to sway her into different careers that she knew she wasn’t passionate about. When it was time for Jen to decide what she wanted to do after her college graduation, she knew she didn’t want to go back to Michigan. Her aunt and uncle offered her a place to stay in DC, where she could teach tennis at their local country club as she searched for a job. Jen knew she wanted to go to California, but her uncle pointed out she didn’t have the same connections out there.

Jen started in telecommunications in DC, which is what she was good at. Though she knew she wasn’t passionate about her telecommunications position, she truster her gut and eventually found out that everything we do in life becomes a life lesson if we let it. Jen would never have created the advisory boards if she didn’t have her community in DC, who have become some of her closest friends.

The Wake Up Call

Jen looked in the mirror one day and saw the shell of who she once was. Where had her vibrancy and determination gone? Who was this empty person staring back at her? Jen took a step back and knew that she had let outside influences affect her negatively. It was time to go back and surround herself with the people she did when she was in vibrant and knew where she wanted to be. This is how Jen created The Dating Advisory Boards. Approaching dating as a business strategy, where she could present her non-negotiables and target an audience, Jen knew she was going to have to become the best version of herself first. Jen used positivity as a game changer, started focusing on self-reflection, health and fitness, and surrounded herself with inspiring people.

Style of Leadership

Jen plays to her strengths and recognizes her weaknesses so she can defer out for help. Jen knows who she is and leads with intention, positivity and active listening, while always thanking others for their help.

What Are You Excited About?

Jen has a new website design coming out soon for The Dating Advisory Board. She also has a Facebook Group for Let’s Get it Together, Sisters, that brings together women to find the right advisory boards and become the best version of themselves, professionally and personally. “If we can be the best versions of ourselves, we are unstoppable.”

Biggest Leadership Challenge

Patience is not a strength of Jen’s. With all of her lists and boards, Jen tries to acknowledge that she cannot accomplish all 30 things in one day and at least 5 things were done that weren’t yesterday.

Leadership Practice

Jen believes in always asking her friends or clients where they need help. Often, they’ll turn around and list what they need done and she can use her networking skills to help people tackle their tasks and guide them to be the best versions of themselves.

Advice For Younger Self

If she could, Jen would have a strict conversation with her younger self, advising her to know her worth. “Never let others’ insecurities about themselves dull your sparkle.” There are so many negative sources out there that want you to fail because they are afraid you will outshine them.

Inspirational Quote

“Let’s get it together, sisters!”

Here’s a tiny peek into what I’ve been struggling with lately. I have been procrastinating on this latest episode of 100% Jodi and I am relieved that I got this out on schedule.

Every time I had a to-do or blocked time out on my calendar to sit down, gather my thoughts and put together an outline of what I wanted to share with you I found other things that were more urgent or I openly admitted to myself I just didn’t have the inspiration to create anything.

However, I had an epiphany yesterday thanks to two episodes on two different podcasts I listened to this week.

The first podcast I wish I could name but it is eluding me right now. I think it’s because I was listening from a selfish place of how it was going to help me.

However, the message has stuck with me. It was an interview and the guest shared that when you have a goal such as running 5 miles in the morning, you can’t think about it in terms of the whole goal - it’s too overwhelming.

Instead consider your goal to be getting up with the alarm, getting dressed and stepping outside. That’s the goal. If you do anything else after that it’s a bonus.

Given that you are already dressed and on your doorstep you are more likely to do the next natural thing which would be to begin walking. Once you are walking it’s likely you’ll start to pick up the pace after you’ve warmed up and gotten into a groove. Wah-lah, you are then on your way to achieving the bigger goal which is to run 5 miles.

Then yesterday I was listening to Luke Iorio’s A Meaningful Way podcast and he was talking about a similar concept. I think I remembered that it came from this podcast because while I was listening I immediately had the thought that I was going to share this with my community. Because of that thought the resource stuck in my head. Lesson learned!

In this particular episode Luke Iorio talked about how when we set a big goal we are creating a goal that we cannot yet achieve. We have to develop ourselves and execute many actions that will take time before we reach the destination.

It’s all logical and yet once we have set this big goal we start comparing our current reality against the future reality of the goal having been realized. It’s unrealistic and only sets us up to feel bad.

However, if every day we focus on a couple or few actions that help us move toward our goal we will feel good about our progress.

These concepts have already had an impact on me.

Ariana Sylvester is not your typical entrepreneur, she’s the "Reality Checker" & partner for her crazy husband & "Idea Man" Tom. Lover of iced chai Lattes, DIY crafting, bursting out in song, and The Big Bang Theory series; Ariana manages all 3 of their businesses from home, along with their two young children. Together they own a rental property business with 18 units, a wine & liquor store, and an online coaching & training membership site for entrepreneurs.

Click to tweet: Ariana Sylvester of @serialstartupco is sharing her story on Women Taking the Lead https://womentakingthelead.com/207 #inspiration

Playing Small Moment

Ariana was taking care of two young children while also running a real estate business and a liquor store with ease. When it was time for her and her husband, Tom, to transition their in-person life coaching to the online world, Ariana struggled. She was unsure of her role in this new online business as Tom was more of the business strategist, and she felt people would rather hear his information. Ariana felt the pressure from herself and her husband to contribute more, but she was at a loss as to how she could help. Tom often calls her out when she is undervaluing herself, and this was no exception. Ariana forgot she was running two businesses on her own and she was finally able to see that she had something to offer their community.

The Wake Up Call

As Ariana and Tom were revamping their online business, which happened to coincide with the birth of their second child, Ariana found herself overwhelmed and miserable. With a 6 month old baby, she was understandably emotional and exhausted. Ariana never said anything, and taking care of the children and doing the bare minimum with the businesses, while doing her best to try and fake that she was okay. In the midst of the chaos, Ariana looked at her life and realized she was unhappy. It took a week or two to talk to Tom about her feelings. Ariana didn’t want to add to his stress, but without clueing him into her feelings he would be left in the dark. This situation was rough, but it gave Tom and Ariana an opportunity to revisit their goals and improve the systems they had in place

Style of Leadership

Ariana defines herself as a bit of a diplomatic leader. She likes to feel connected to people and give them a relaxed and cool environment. Her style is the opposite of Tom’s, who is more of a project management person who asks the hard questions. Ariana likes it to be light, but she will still tell the truth in a more sensitive fashion. As an employer, she is more laid back. There is a binder at her brick and mortar businesses with listed expectations and the employees are given leeway to be their own person inside the business.

What Are You Excited About?

Ariana and her husband have a startup academy. It takes people through the five stages of the very beginning of starting a business, through operating it and then growing it to scale. Recently, they took out a piece of their academy as a teaser, a Start Up Roadmap Checklist. This checklist takes you through the phases and each step inside the phase before you start a business through starting the business. They are also rolling out a new free trial for the academy so they can help more people.

Biggest Leadership Challenge

One of the biggest challenges that Ariana and Tom face in their business is that they don’t get their message out as affectively in the online community as they do in-person.

Leadership Practice

Ariana likes to really listen to what people are saying and put herself in their shoes so she can ask herself what she can do to help.

Advice For Younger Self

Ariana was always confident in most areas, but not all. Ariana would say to her younger self, “Be yourself to the fullest. Say what you’re thinking even if it’s the unpopular view point.”

Inspirational Quote

“Be the kind of leader that you would follow.”

Hello everyone and thank you for joining me today. This episode is going live the day before we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and for me this signifies that I will be competing in my first Spartan race in exactly 3 months.

I’ll admit I have not been taking my training as seriously as I wanted to at the outset and now I’m making some dramatic changes to my schedule and lifestyle to get myself in the best shape so I can enjoy the experience. Yes, I did say I want to enjoy this Spartan race. I know it will be tough but I also know there is a satisfaction that comes when at the end of the race I can say I did my best and for me my best includes the training.

Wish me luck!

A Type A Discovery

Over the past year or so I began to realize that I attracted into my community and my clientele women who all seemed to fit a particular personality profile. It was no surprise that they were a lot like me.

They were going through challenges I had overcome or was in the process of overcoming, they had strengths that were similar to my strengths, and weaknesses that were similar to my weaknesses.

When I began to sort out all the trends and commonalities it jumped out at me what I and these women all had in common. We all had Type A tendencies.

Since then I have spoken about being Type A women, I wrote my book for Type A women and I’ve spent more time focusing on how to help these women not only be successful but to feel successful.

With these conversations I’ve also had more women wonder aloud to me if they are Type A. Sure enough many of them do have a lot of Type A tendencies, but Type A, Type B and Type C all describe a variety of tendencies that live on a spectrum. So you don’t want to think of yourself as being wholly Type A or Type B but rather recognize the degree to which you are each of the Types.

I wanted to go deeper into Type A in this episode so that you will know once and for all the degree to which you are or are not Type A.

The Definitions of Type A

According to the Business Dictionary, Type A is "a temperament characterized by excessive ambition, aggression, competitiveness, drive, impatience, need for control, focus on quantity over quality and unrealistic sense of urgency.”

Well that doesn’t sound very complimentary but that’s a starting point so let’s continue.

Kara Lamerato is a wedding planner, but not in the traditional sense.  After running a wedding product-based business for over five years, she launched the Wedding Planning Podcast to share her industry expertise with a global audience.

She leads engaged couples to see that affordability and common sense can overturn the expense & excess of the wedding industry.

Kara lives in San Diego CA with her husband John, daughter Stella (4) & son John William (2), and loves to travel, run, & read.

Click to tweet: .@karasvinwedding is sharing her story to inspire you on Women Taking the Lead https://womentakingthelead.com/206 #inspiration

Playing Small Moment

On the last day of Podcast Movement 2016, Kara’s sister and I were having coffee when Kara came over to join us. Kara was familiar with The Women Taking the Lead Podcast, as her peers and mentors had been guests on the show. She was impressed by the caliber and the things that those women were tackling. Kara remembers sitting in the lobby as we talked about the potential of her being a guest on the show and her first thought was, “Oh, please!” Kara didn’t feel qualified to be featured on this show, as she only viewed herself as someone who makes little wedding decorations, how could she be on this show? I had to shift her perception a bit so she could see herself in a different light. Kara states that at that moment, she realized that her listeners may be inspired by not only her wedding advice, but her whole journey from engagement to newlywed, through her corporate struggle and her daily life as a mom. Kara just needed to hear the words out loud to change the way she viewed everything.

The Wake Up Call

Kara has been at home with her two children for the past four years. Her daughter starts kindergarten in the Fall, so she is trying to prepare for her next steps in her business. Kara didn’t want to move away from her homemade projects, but she wanted to explore different directions. There was one week that she received four of the exact same emails, all asking if they could hire her as their wedding planner and the lightbulb went off. Kara realizes that she won’t be able to sit down one-on-one with everyone, but she can look at it as an opportunity to open up another part of her business.

Style of Leadership

Kara’s style is very visionary. She likes to meet people in person, or virtually, put her arm around them and give them a big hug and lead them on a walk to an end game where they are living the wedding of their dreams. Along this visual journey, Kara wants to encourage couples to experiment, explore and think outside the box about how to get there. Kara believes that there is no one size fits all, or one way journey. “It’s about common sense and thinking outside the box and getting creating with what you have.”

What Are You Excited About?

Kara is working really hard on a couple of different ways to work with her one-on-one or inside a small group setting. She is excited to share more down the road, when there are more details.

Biggest Leadership Challenge

Guiding couples to see past the excess and expense can be challenging for Kara at times. She peels back those layers of glitz and glam and shows them that it can be simpler and more common sense based.

Leadership Practice

Kara religiously stays engaged with her audience. She is a firm believer that without your audience and without your customers, you are not going to have a business. So, Kara makes sure to answer each email personally, and is always there for those who reach out. Kara listens to her audience and finds out what they need and want. “Until you know that, you can’t lead. You would be a blind leader. Know who you are leading.”

Advice For Younger Self

Kara firmly believes she is where she is in life for all of the choices and decisions she has mad, and she is at peace with that. Though, if Kara could have had a window into the entrepreneurial world, she may not have spend 7 years at a corporate job that she did not love. Kara would tap herself on  the shoulder and say, “There’s more. There is a passion, and this is not it. So get busy trying to find it.”

Today we are talking about ways in which you can reward yourself if you hit a milestone or accomplished a goal. My clients know for every achievement we are planning a reward. I am constantly asking, “What are you going to do to celebrate?”

This is really hard for Type A women because for us, achievement is what is expected so the thought of getting a reward for something that was expected is a hard concept for us to wrap our minds around.

What I find is it’s not hard for Type A women to be convinced that a reward or celebration is a good thing. It’s logical when you think that this could be a great way to allow the experience to sink in and to motivate you to do the next thing.

No, where they get stuck is deciding what reward to give themselves. Type A women often put rest, relaxation, fun and enjoyment last on their list of priorities and so it can be difficult to think of something in the moment.

I have a colleague who thinks it’s hilarious to ask me every time we meet up what I’ve been doing for fun. My response every time is, “I don’t have do anything for fun, I bring the fun.” And then I change the subject.

Another struggle can that what is a reward for those around you, may not be something you are interested in. I have a friend whose favorite reward is to have dinner in really nice restaurant. The whole experience lights her up. For me, I can’t fully relax in that kind of environment. The food and drinks are delicious but when the bill comes, I get sticker-shocked and the last thing I experience is that I have been rewarded.

The Reward Needs to Bolster the Achievement

For those of you who might hesitate or balk at being asked “what are you going to do to reward yourself?” I’ve got some ideas for you. These are just ideas to help you start thinking about what would be a reward for you. Ultimately only you know what gives you a sense of reward.

Let me start by saying that the reward needs to bolster the achievement. If you’ve lost weight you don’t want to reward yourself with pizza and ice-cream. If you’ve hit your goal of saving a certain amount of money or paying off your debt you don’t want to reward yourself with a shopping spree.

You want to think about rewards that feel good but will also help you to move forward with your goals. On the podcast Happier, Gretchen Rubin and Elizabeth Craft discuss this at length.

An example I have from my life is, after I released my book which required a lot of long hours of focused attention I allowed myself a day to putter. The definition of putter that I like comes from Merriam-Webster and it is “to work at random.”

I didn’t necessarily take an entire day off from my business but I didn’t structure my day. I allowed myself to do what I wanted to do in any given moment. If I felt like doing my bookkeeping, I did bookkeeping. When I felt like cleaning the bathroom, I cleaned the bathroom. If I felt like reading, I read.

My day was a mix of unstructured personal and business projects. It was aimless and freeing, and by the end of the day I had actually accomplished a lot but none of it was required which is what made it feel like a reward. As much as I love structure I also love freedom so this was perfect for me.

Here are some ideas for you…

Lee Hews, founder of Current Publishing & Maine Women Magazine has logged 30 years on the Maine publishing scene. Lee believes that outstanding local content, great design and fabulous art will build a strong and loyal readership, while providing the best environment for the advertising customer. Lee, a Maine woman for more than half her life is a Mom to four strong Maine women and mentor to countless others. She received an Executive MBA from Suffolk University in 2013.

Click to tweet: Lee Hews of @MaineWomenMag is sharing her story to inspire you on Women Taking the Lead https://womentakingthelead.com/205 #inspiration

Playing Small Moment

Lee has always been a hard worker who wanted to incorporate herself into the business and as much managerial decisions as possible, to the point of often doing her boss’s work. A colleague of Lee’s pointed out one day that she was performing all of the work without the title, recognition or proper pay. Lee laughed it off at the time, giving the credit to her manager, but this statement forced her to really see what was happening. Within the next year, Lee was promoted to general manager and a year later had started her own company.

The Wake Up Call

Lee found herself in a place of nonstop work, keeping up the building momentum, until one day she was ready to sell. Lee had discussed the idea of selling with her family, and knew it was the right thing to do, but was leery. Lee wasn’t giving up, and she didn’t want it to be perceived as that. She didn’t want to disappoint her employees, partners, or their readers. Lee’s wake up call was realizing that this sale would be the best way for her to grow, and to continue to grow the products she had created. Lee made the call to the people she wanted to buy, and the sale took place 10 months later.

Style of Leadership

Lee is the publisher; she brings it all together. Lee leads by example in her role. She works very hard—is creative and passionate—and she expects everyone working with her to be productive. Lee stands by her view, “We all have to produce, we can’t just talk about it.”

What Are You Excited About?

Lee is just as passionate as ever about the work she is doing with Maine Women Magazine. The magazine has been in the market for 10 years, but was recently relaunched as a glossy publication. It keeps keeps getting bigger and better and they get more excited with each issue. Maine Women Magazine is also involved in three upcoming expos and sponsoring a wide range of women’s events and panels.

Biggest Leadership Challenge

Patience is Lee’s biggest leadership challenge. She has never been particularly patient, so she is learning to be patient with the process. Lee believes that you have to be patient with people all around you. Another leadership challenge Lee has faced is always trying to find the right people to work with.

Leadership Practice

Lee is very adamant in her ability to reconsider. If you are on a course, or are set on an idea or a plan, you need to be able to step back and reevaluate, and feel good about pursuing a different path, even though you may have planned it out differently. Lee also believes in listening to yourself and others and always asking for advice and input.

Advice For Younger Self

Lee would advise her younger self to bee more patient. Also, to take time and understand what motivates each individual and learn what each person can bring to the table, as everyone can bring something different.

“It’s all about balance.” ~Lee Hews

For you today I wanted to share an email I received from a client after she did the “Get Your Energy Back” Process I offer in my business. How it works is you take a 20-minute online self-assessment and then we schedule 75 minutes to debrief your results. During that debrief session we uncover where your sources of stress are coming from and what you can do to alleviate it so you greatly reduce, and for some completely remove, those triggers for stress. It also gives you a process to continue this work as you become aware of other triggers that hide under the surface until the crop up and blindside you. You all know what I’m talking about. J

Even before meeting me this particular client had been working on developing a greater level of consciousness and she was in a place where she felt caught between the new perspectives, thoughts and ideas she was being exposed to and her parent’s counsel to seek her truth from a more traditional source.

Here’s what her email said…

“Hi Jodi,

I'm having a hard time relating my personal feelings of "Aha!" that I felt when I read [Eckhart] Tolle's work to the background both of my parents have in the bible.

That's a poorly worded sentence. How do I explain??

When I told my parents about my new discovery of enlightenment, they were quick to try to redirect me to the bible (dad, especially). Almost as though what I was learning was wrong, and I needed to get closer to God to fix this. But I've never felt closer to God than I do now.

So how do the teachings of the bible fit in to this? Admittedly, it's been a loooong time since I've attended church, and the style of the bible's writings just don't interest me. I have a hard time following it. But I want to understand the connection so that I can bridge the gap with my Dad.

I ask because you mentioned God a few times during the assessment, and I thought you might have some insight.

I almost feel like the bible is the basic how-to guide, and maybe even a little bit of backstory on why, while this new consciousness trajectory is simply mankind finally "getting it" and seeing the bigger picture of where things need to go in order to reach that final destination of heaven on earth. How do you see it?

Ok, back to work I go! ;)”

What a great question!! What was so special about this question for me is it paralleled my own internal journey with my faith and spirituality.

I’m sharing with you my response to this email and I want to be clear, I have no degrees in theology, I do not represent any organizations and I am not an expert on God, consciousness or human evolution. My response to this email reflects my journey and my perspective. I offer it here because it was helpful to the woman who reached out to me and it may be helpful to some of you.

Here was my response...
