Welcome to this community of women taking the lead!

Our private facebook group is getting more action. I am getting better at starting conversations and you lovely ladies have been very generous in sharing your experiences, practices and resources in the group. It’s like we have our own mini podcast episodes going on there. So, if you’re not in there yet and are interested in joining in on the conversation go to https://www.facebook.com/groups/womentl/.

Sponsorship Opportunities

I also wanted to mention that I am looking for businesses who want to collaborate in supporting Women Taking the Lead and getting their own name out there in the process. I’m already in discussions with a couple of women who I would really love to introduce you to so keep your fingers crossed. If this is an opportunity that interests you go to https://womentakingthelead.com/sponsor-opportunities/

Full Disclosure

I am scared to go big but I want it so bad!

Can you relate to that?

Like a lot of you I know I am capable of so much more but the fear of the unknown and what life would look like if I started playing even bigger causes me to hold back and keep it to myself.

And here’s the bold truth, said openly and directly: I would love to work with you.

I want to be a partner with you in your journey to the top. I want to help you discover your superpowers, identify and honor your values and challenge you to do the next scary thing, knowing I’m cheering you on the whole way.

I’ve been working with women all over the globe. Online video conferencing is a magical thing and allows us to have virtual face-to-face conversations, no matter where we live.

Some things my clients say about me is that I instill a belief in themselves that they didn’t have before working with me; a belief and a confidence that they are fully capable to achieve their goals and a certainty that they will.

What My Clients Tell Me

My superpower is identifying and helping other people to see their own superpowers. And when you own your superpowers and realize the value they have it boosts your confidence and makes you want to go right out and use those superpowers.

My clients also tell me I help them to get focused.

There are so many different strategies and actions we can take to try to hit our goals but which ones will yield the best results for you, with the least amount of effort so you can either increase your bandwidth or find more personal time?

When you are not diverting your energy in too many places you can produce more results.

I work with entrepreneurial women who feel called to something greater.

She has a vision of success that she has not yet attained.

What I’ve come to realize is my clients don’t just want to do well; they want to be in the upper ranks. They want to be the expert in their industry, the person everyone else looks up to. They work really hard, they know their stuff and they in turn want to help others to achieve as well.

This woman comes to me because she’s frustrated. Although she is in a place where those around her would congratulate her, she hasn’t hit that level yet that would signify to her that she has “made it.”

She usually finds her current tasks to be tedious and boring. She’s feeling a calling, a compulsion to “do more” so the everyday tasks remind her that she’s not there yet.

She’s getting restless and looking for distractions. She may be starting to lean into the quick coping methods of food, alcohol, shopping or exercise.

She’s feeling overworked. She’s trying so hard to play bigger with very traction it’s leaving her exhausted.

She has high standards and high expectations of herself and that projects out onto others so she gets annoyed when other people aren’t doing their part. You’ll hear her say things like, “I just want them to do their job” or “why can’t they just do what they said they would do.”

What Got You Here Won’t Get You There.

The success strategy that has always worked before and gotten her this far won’t get her any further.

She has to change her mindset so she can change her strategy, and she needs to overcome some fears.

My question to you is, are you this woman?

Because this is exactly where I come in and can be of assistance.

I can help you tease out of your current strategy exactly what’s working and what’s not working and together we create a new strategy customized to get you the results you are looking for.

I would love to partner with you!

If this fired you up or made you really scared go to womentakingthelead.com/coaching to get started.

If this description doesn’t exactly match you, no worries. My larger mission is to support all women to own their power and step up as leaders in whatever area of their life they would like to make a difference and that’s what this podcast is all about.

Thank you all for being a part of my journey and here’s to your success!

Melinda Chen is a sales coach, helping female entrepreneurs sell to big clients. She is also a sales executive with an impressive sales track record of 8 figures. Her company, Women Making Big Sales, allows female entrepreneurs to start connecting and sell to big clients in 5 weeks. When she first started her sales career after university, she wanted to know everything about selling. So, she spent years reading over 20 books in sales, made over 5,000 cold calls and worked with agents, reps and corporate clients around the world. Since then, she has mastered the art of selling to big companies and made sales in the Americas, Europe and Asia, covering a wide range of industries. She is inspired to help women take control of their lives by going for big clients, closing important deals and dramatically expanding their business.

Playing Small Moment

Melinda went through many struggles when she first started selling. She was fresh out of college and working with people that had been in the industry for years. Melinda was nervous while attending a networking event and she even made up cards for talking points. Melinda was getting treated like she was the new kid on the block, so to avoid attending these events she began cold calling. Melinda learned she didn’t have to take things so personally and that the reason they treated her that way was because she was the new kid.

The Wake Up Call

Melinda was the queen of the cold calls, but she wasn’t reaching her sales goals. On a rainy night, while still at the office, she ran into one of the senior executives. He asked her how things were going, and she explained her process. The executive told her it was taking the same amount of time for his sales. He told her not to waste her time going after the small clients and to go for the larger ones instead.

Style of Leadership

Working with a lot of female entrepreneurs, Melinda learned demonstrating things is far more teachable than telling.

What Are You Excited About?

Heart of Sales is a 5-week program where Melinda shows people how to sell step-by-step.

Leadership Practice

Melinda listens and empathizes with her clients.

Suzanne Doyle-Ingram is a best-selling author of 7 books, and she has written or co-written a total of 13 books. She has also helped over a hundred business professionals get published by bringing together the collaborative efforts of experts in various fields that contribute to one book on a specific topic. Suzanne has had tremendous success with this model.

In addition, she also coaches and trains individuals and existing authors on how to write and publish a book and how to use that book as leverage to increase their visibility, open doors for speaking engagements, grow their brand and business, and much more. She lives on the West Coast of Canada with her husband James and three kids ages 9, 12 and 14.

Playing Small Moment

Suzanne recalls playing it small by not knowing her value, and the value of what she could do. When Suzanne was approached to help create an entire course, she jumped at the opportunity. Creating this course took up much of her schedule and without a written agreement she was not compensated appropriately. Suzanne created this course in hopes of someday making money, when she should have charged up front for the hard work it would require.

The Wake Up Call

When Suzanne first started her Expert Author program, one of her privately coached students forwarded her an email containing quite the testimonial. The student raved about how her book was guaranteeing her business success. This prompted Suzanne to notice that she had all of the proof needed to spread the word about her course.

Style of Leadership

As described by one of her past students, Suzanne is a coach, a best friend and a mom all rolled into one. She tries to be nice and encouraging, but also sets deadlines and follows up frequently to make sure her students are on target.

What Are You Excited About?

Suzanne is currently working on writing multiple books. Her and twelve professionals are writing a book on mortgage, she is ghost writing a realtor book and an entrepreneur book and is looking for students for her private coaching.

Leadership Practice

Suzanne is continually learning. Even though she knows more than her clients do, Suzanne is always learning to help her clients as much as she can.

Advice For Younger Self

Charge more. Suzanne was not brave enough to charge more and she was working too hard for not enough money. Know your value and know your worth. Realize how the work you do helps others make money.

She helps entrepreneurs to cash-in on their expertise & build their online business the right way to make it profitable & automated, so they can spend more time with their loved ones. Her mantra is: Connect, Build, Automate.

Playing Small Moment

Fabienne was scared to put herself out there for fear of what others would say. Silencing her true self, she struggled to fit in and please everyone. While in a mastermind group, she clashed with another entrepreneur because she saw herself not as skilled as the other women, despite all of their similarities. This caused a rift that couldn’t be repaired during their project.

The Wake Up Call

Fabienne’s wakeup call wasn’t just one day, but a series of events to expose who she really was. Her business partner was a great influence on her life and business skills. Fabienne realized what she was expressing was only a small percentage of who she was. Shocking to her, once she was acting like herself people were accepting her and she started embracing her true self.

Style of Leadership

Fabienne likes to lead with passion, confidence and empathy. She puts herself in the shoes of the person she is serving and is very conscious of what others are feeling and experiencing.

What Are You Excited About?

Leadership Practice

Listening. With all of the selfies and status updates on social media, we are not used to listening to each other. Ask a question as a follow up instead of make a comment about yourself, but you have to really be in it. If you are sincerely interested in other people, they will be more interested to help you as well.

Susan Morris is a condominium developer in Portland, Maine and Principal of NewHeight Group, a firm specializing in providing marketing, branding and business strategy to organizations developing new products and services, or repositioning existing ones. Susan is a Maine Angel and is actively engaged in Maine Startup and Create Week, Women Standing Together, TopGun and the House of Genius. She has built and exited from several businesses.

Prior to having her own businesses, Susan worked for Marriott International for 13 years. Susan is co-author of a college textbook, Hospitality Sales: A Marketing Approach and serves as a speaker, adjunct professor and facilitator.

Playing Small Moment

During her Marriott career, Susan was the account manager for very large accounts, handling all aspects of their development and strategies. The man who replaced her when she relocated to a new position packaged up her work, claiming it as his own, and teaching presentations about it all throughout Marriott. Looking back, she viewed her work as not fully complete and realized that a lot of women tend to do the same.

The Wake Up Call

There were two instances during her career with Marriott where Susan was up for a job against men, where she was the more qualified candidate that didn’t get the job. When Susan inquired why she was not chosen for the job, her boss informed her that the man was married and had two kids to put through college. Susan realized as you go higher in a company, there tends to be more people who think the same and they don’t like it when you challenge those thoughts.

Style of Leadership

Susan believes in rallying people to believe in her vision and see what their part is in that vision. She is an exceedingly verbal person and quite proactive in throwing out ideas, recognizing that it gives people a chance to react. Susan prides herself on being able to change her mind and be convinced to do so.

What Are You Excited About?

Susan is excited about a new condominium, Luminato, with a new theme of living light. This condominium will bring about new concepts of living and the idea that if you live in a bright space, you can live in a smaller space. They will be including new amenities, such as a guest room you would see in a hotel and a community room to do your work or hang out in. Something else that excites Susan is that there are more female buyers than male buyers now.

Leadership Practice

Susan is full of curiosity about the world and the people she gets to interact with. Her style can be described as what you see is what you get.

Marissa Lawton is a Self-Esteem & Strategy Coach for Mompreneurs. In a previous life, Marissa was a Mental Health Counselor who specialized in women's issues. Today, she uses her training as a licensed therapist along with her business degree to help moms raise their biz babies while raising their real-life babies.

Playing Small Moment

Marissa realized, at her 8th grade graduation, the importance of grades and reputation. She wanted to go to college and growing up with a single mom she knew the only way she could get there was by earning a full-ride scholarship. All throughout high school she would daydream about moving to a far away place and getting out of the area. However, during her junior year, Marissa received a full-ride scholarship from Arizona State University, which was only 2 hours away. Marissa jumped at the chance because she decided to stay closer to home. That choice changed the course of her life forever.

The Wake Up Call

The corporate world was not for Marissa, so she decided to go down the Mental Health path instead. Marissa became a mother because her daughter at birth had some health concerns, so she quit her job to stay at home. Marissa had Post- Partum Depression because she didn’t have a purpose in life and she didn’t know what was going to happen with her daughter’s health. Marissa never figured she would be an entrepreneur at a young age. However, when the opportunity arose, she took it.

Style of Leadership

The ability to meet people where they are in their process by using her listening skills is Marissa’s style of leadership. She believes no one is one-size fits all.

What Are You Excited About?

Marissa is excited about helping moms. The Riss Lawton Company’s mission is showing women they can be excellent mothers and still have passion and purpose beyond motherhood. She has two free resources: More than Mom Mini Course and Feel Good Schedule Challenge.

Leadership Practice

Listening for undertones - it’s more about what people don’t say than what they do say.

I don’t think it will come as a surprise for anyone that in the past year I’ve spent a lot of time contemplating our position as women in the workplace, in the home and in society - more than I ever have in the past.

Multiple conversations per week flow into more conversations and more pondering. Sometimes, I admit, I get a little overwhelmed - like I’m trying to crack a code that no one has been able to solve yet.

There are many reasons why as women we are faced with bias and some are out of our control.

However, what I’ve come to see as the biggest obstacle to our confidence and equal opportunities is ourselves.

Collectively, it is our own self-imposed limits that are having the greatest impact on the slow progress we’ve had as women.

Stay with me for a bit, Here is a story from my own experience.

In grammar school my peers and I were assigned in work groups based on what our ability was believed to be in certain subjects and the teacher taught each group according to this criteria.

When I was in the 3rd grade I was placed in the middle reading group in school. At some point during the year my teacher met with my parents to propose moving me to the higher reading group because the workload in my level was too easy for me.

The change was made and the problems began.

I wasn’t finishing my work and it wasn’t at the same caliber it had been.

My peaceful existence in the 3rd grade suddenly changed. I was publicly ridiculed by my teacher and accused of being lazy. My teacher seemed to look for opportunities after that to criticize me.

In the 3rd grade I began wetting myself at school.

Luckily in the 4th grade I had a wonderful and compassionate teacher and I worked hard to prove myself worthy of her kindness. I excelled in school through the sixth grade and was always in the top groups.

Then when transitioning to Catholic school in the 7th grade I tested into the middle level.

I was shocked by that having been in all top levels since the 3rd grade but it was explained to me that Catholic school was harder than public school and I was actually an average student in this new system. I wasn’t happy but I accepted what I was told.

Until high school when I tested into the highest level once again. However, after 2 years of being average and at an older age when these beliefs become more firm, I could not accept this change.

My parents were pleased but I was not. I was freaked out. Remember the last experience I had when moved into a higher level?

The thought that ran through my head as I sat in the classroom on the first day of school was, “I don’t belong here, I don’t belong here. I’m going to fail.”

This was reinforced when a girl from my previous school, who had been in a higher level, looked at me with surprise as she walked into the room that first day and asked what I was doing there.

I transferred this thought to my new classmates in the room. It didn’t matter that they didn’t know me. In my mind they knew I was a fraud and that I shouldn’t be there.

For weeks I begged, I pleaded and lashed out in anger at my parents and my guidance counselor. They wouldn’t budge. I had tested well and I belonged in the honors level classes. In their mind - that was that, case closed.

Long story short – I intentionally flunked Biology that first quarter and my parents and guidance counselor, much to their chagrin, agreed to move me down two levels to the middle level.

Do you know it took me the next 2½ years to get back into honors level classes? The reality was I didn’t belong in the middle level classes.

It was only after meeting an amazing teacher, who helped me to begin changing the beliefs about my abilities, reinforced by other teachers around me, that I could begin to see I had been wrong about myself.

Until I changed the belief I had about myself that I was only an average student I couldn’t excel in school.

This isn’t just the case with me, this happens to us all.

We create an outward reality that reflects the internal beliefs we have. The two have to connect.

This is the crux of the work I do with my clients.

When they change their limiting beliefs about themselves and what’s possible, they suddenly have this renewed energy and confidence to take action or take new actions.

With these new actions things start to change and they start getting the things they’ve always wanted but couldn’t seem to make a reality, be it better relationships, more money, or to finally write their book.

Until we as women are willing to believe that we are worthy of more; that we deserve the right to speak up and advocate for ourselves, to be treated well - what we will get is what we’ve always gotten.

Isn’t it time you got something different?

I saw a meme on Facebook recently that stated, “When you stand up for yourself as a woman you stand up for all women.”

How true is that?

I hope this was helpful for you.

Give me your feedback by commenting on the post that accompanies this episode or by leaving me a rating and review in iTunes. I see and appreciate all the feedback I get there and it also makes this podcast more visible for those who want to be in community and get support from others just like them.

Thank you so much and here’s to your success!

Dr. Joanie Connell is the founder of Flexible Work Solutions, a consulting firm that specializes in leadership assessment and development.  She is the author of Flying without a Helicopter: How to Prepare Young People for Work and Life.  She received her doctorate from UC Berkeley and her bachelors from Harvard.

Playing Small Moment

After Joanie had graduated with her Psychology degree, she decided to apply for the CSPP (California School of Professional Psychology). When CSPP made the offer, she accepted the salary, which was in alignment with the wage Berkley stated. Joanie didn’t counter; she accepted it as is. The program director at CSPP boosted her salary because he realized she didn’t negotiate and was worth more than she was initially offered.

The Wake Up Call

Joanie had her wake up call after she left her previous job of being a professor over a decade ago. Joanie became a consultant and wasn’t sure what she could offer others that hadn’t been offered before. One of her contacts called her to develop an assessment center for executives; they told her the reason why, she was reliable, ethical, structured, and would get the job done. Joanie realized at that moment what her brand was going to be.

Style of Leadership

Situational is Joanie’s leadership style. Listening and paying attention to what's needed in any given situation and being adaptable.

What Are You Excited About?

Joanie’s excited about her book Flying without a Helicopter: How to Prepare Young People for Work and Life. She’s taken lessons learned from successful people and is bringing it to the younger generation, helping them realize what their needs are and focusing more on life skills than academics and experiences.

Joanie listens more and talks less. She finds this is the best way to know what is going on with someone. People don’t always want to know your opinion.

Michelle Mazur, Ph.D. is hired by speakers and entrepreneurs to create speaking as profit-center for their business by building a speech-like product that positions them as the go-to expert in their field. She is the CEO of Communication Rebel. She lives in Seattle, WA with her adoring husband, 2 obsessive felines, and a huge collection of Duran Duran memorabilia.

Playing Small Moment

Michelle was taking Debate during her Junior Year of College and read the judges’ comments on the ballot while on a trip back home. She saw, in big bold letters, a capital B and a word that rhymes with witch. That moment ended up changing her life. She was scared of speaking up which still plagues her today; Michelle has never shared this story with another audience before.

The Wake Up Call

Michelle needed to find her voice; she was a blogger and didn’t know how to go about showing her passion in her writing. Michelle attended a conference; the lady at the beginning tricked and duped the whole audience. She was very upset, and while the woman was still speaking, Michelle wrote a rant about “How to Not Be a Motivational Speaker” - it was funny and cutting. Michelle published it the next day and was waiting for the backlash. She received an email from someone telling her she did a great job, and they wanted to hire her as a speaking coach. Michelle had her aha moment, realizing it is OK to have a different perspective than others.

Style of Leadership

Michelle is very direct in her leadership style and has good vision. She will ask her team what they think, before she goes ahead with implementing a decision, to ensure everyone else is onboard.

Rachael Thompson Phillips is a Spiritual Entrepreneur, Business and Spiritual Mentor, and Founder of Successfully SASSY and 'BEYOU' Oracle Cards. She works with sassy spiritual lady entrepreneurs who are lightworkers, healers, therapists, psychics, psychic mediums, yoga teachers and coaches providing a service based business and want to unleash their potential and become successful spiritual entrepreneurs through online businesses and/or online courses.

Playing Small Moment

Rachael always learned to follow her intuition. During Easter vacation 15 years ago, she decided to ride on a jet boat. Rachel was saying goodbye to everyone when her heart sunk. She didn’t listen to her gut instinct, 5 minutes into the trip the steering cable snapped and she was thrown from the jet boat into the water going 80mph. Rachael was under the water angry at how she hadn’t lived her life’s purpose yet and how she almost died leaving her family and friends behind.

The Wake Up Call

Rachael’s aha moment was creating two different careers with absolutely no knowledge behind them. This time, she decided to go with her instincts and realized it was the right thing to do. Rachael knew all the pieces would come together. She had to change her mindset from being a teacher to being the student. Rachael knew she could achieve anything she wanted to.

Style of Leadership

Determination! Rachel wants to know how things are relevant to help other people live a more congruent life.

What Are You Excited About?

Rachael created a deck of Oracle cards called BEYOU. She wanted to give women the tool to learn more about themselves.

Leadership Practice

Vicky Murgatroyd is a mindset coach and transformation specialist. After losing her Mom and finding out her partner was cheating on her weeks later, she lost herself completely. Discovering the world of personal development, Vicky finally owned the responsibility she had, both towards her failings and then her potential. She now shows other entrepreneurial women that self-awareness and self-knowing are the only way to success.

Playing Small Moment

Vicky's playing small moment was when one of the girls in her group of friends verbally abused her. She slipped into a perception of believing that was her reality, rather than having the confidence to know that she defines herself. Vicky thought if she could make herself unnoticeable, it would all go away.

The Wake Up Call

Vicky’s aha moment happened when she lost her mom, leaving her to feel like she had nobody to fall back on. Vicky learned, from her practitioner, about a new process to help her let go of her emotions. She needed to get over her boundaries in order to get over emotions. It was an emotionally draining process. Vicky didn't notice at the time, but she started to move past her feelings. She could see the light at the end of the long winding tunnel.

Style of Leadership

Naturally introverted, Vicky plays the role of the observer. She gets people to find the answers within themselves.

What Are You Excited About?

The launch of Vicky's program is in its second stage. Master Your Emotions, which is about a person who can't grow their business bigger than their mindset allows.

Niyc helps women, struggling to find their self-belief, overcome negative self-talk, activate next level breakthroughs in their life and business, and create their life of joy, personal power, and unstoppable success. Her signature 90 Day Master Your Success Mentorship and Guru Girl Entrepreneur Mastermind combine the power of Positive Psychology with Niyc’s decade of experience in coaching women to create positive change, and produce dramatic and long lasting results. Niyc is from the UK, where she recently won Young Entrepreneur of the Year and is currently travelling the world, speaking and coaching. She is Founder of niycpidgeon.com, Award Winning lifestyle brand optimallyou, Newcastle parkrun, and her first book Now Is Your Chance will hit the book shelves in March 2017, with Hay House

Playing Small Moment

Niyc began her career as a personal trainer. She would push herself really hard. The income wasn't great, but she was doing something she really loved. Niyc got to a point where she felt stuck while working, going to school, and going back to work at night. That came at a detriment to her health and she felt like a victim. She was playing small because she gave struggle the strength.

The Wake Up Call

Last June, Niyc had taken two months off from her business to write her book. She had savings in the bank and was launching an online group program at the end of that two-month gap. She knew it was going to be a success because she worked so hard on it for 6 months with her assistant. When Niyc launched the program, she had a grand total of one sale. Real panic and fear started to set in. She got one or two more sales as weeks went on. Niyc was on the other side of the world, sold her car, and moved out of her apartment. She was faced with the prospect of getting a job and leaving entrepreneurship behind. Niyc decided she needed to stay true to what she talked to her community and clients about. Never abandon yourself. Always back yourself and always believe in yourself. If you don't believe in yourself, then nobody else is going to believe in you.

Style of Leadership

Strength and Love is her leadership style. Niyc leads from a loving heart with joy and inspiration. As a leader she wants to create an atmosphere that is supportive.

What Are You Excited About?

Niyc is in the editing process of her book Now is Your Chance. She is working on a TV Series, Niyc TV or Happiness TV, still in creation at the moment.

Leadership Practice

Niyc's morning mindset ritual is what gets her ready in the morning. By building a strong body and strong mind you are able to go out there and seize the day and be a powerful strong leader that is coming from the right place.

This past year I kicked off a local mastermind group in Maine. The participants gelled very quickly and within an hour they were being very open about their struggles, the current state of their business, and where they would like to be making more progress.

Some common themes quickly cropped up and one in particular was the need to constantly work on creating the conditions for a great life, as well as what is required to maintain those conditions.

One of the participants blurted out, “Happiness is not for the faint of heart!” We all chucked but it was laughter with the ring of truth.

And she is right. Happiness is not something you work for, achieve, and then you can forever stare at your happiness diploma on the wall

Do You Feel Like a Happiness Failure?

Happiness is not an achievement at all and I think that’s where many of us go wrong. Happiness is a state of being - it can come and go based on the choices we make and our current level of awareness.

If you feel like your failing because there are times when you are clearly not happy, you are not alone. In fact, floating in and out of happiness is part of the human experience but you can increase the amount of happiness you experience overall.

This is something that hit me over the head recently when I noticed that things that once rolled right off my shoulders started to bother me. My patience was wearing thin and I started to feel unappreciated.

These are red flags for me!

This is an early warning (or not so early warning) system for me that I am exhausted and need to unplug from work, obligations, or anything that doesn’t serve my greater good.

And I do need to unplug.

Despite all my recommendations otherwise to my friends, family and clients, I haven’t had a day off in months.

If I only put in a few hours of work on a Saturday or Sunday I consider that a “day off.”

I know what I’m afraid of: that everything will unravel if I take time for myself.

I pride myself on excellence; it’s one of my core values and I’m afraid I will have to sacrifice excellence if take time for myself and fill it with non-purposeful fluff.

Also, I have a sense that my business is on a precipice. It’s nearing that tipping point where at any time I can suddenly grow and then (yes then!) I can hire someone to take some of this load off my shoulders.

The problem is I know this way of thinking is a trap. I’m more likely to see my business to the next level if I am well rested and enjoying my work.

You and I will not experience happiness if we are running ourselves into the ground. If we are pushing ourselves too hard we may actually be preventing the very experience we are trying to obtain: happiness.

In 2002, Sheila Ronning believed so strongly in women’s ability to serve on corporate boards that she became the founder & CEO of Women in the Boardroom. Today, as one of the nation’s top leadership and board service experts, Sheila excels at connecting influential women executives and professionals with the people and tools they need to succeed in business and the boardroom.  She has built a strong track record and a powerful network over the years, which she uses to help women achieve their goals. When asked about her secret to networking, Sheila says to “Be fearless, sincere, honest, and frank.”

Playing Small Moment

Sheila is a life learner. She was playing small when she was working for a major retailer. She realized her boss was always just dangling a carrot in front of her face. He was always giving the store management positions to the guys. Sheila was selling herself short by constantly needing to please him.

The Wake Up Call

The aha moment Shelia can remember was when she moved from Minneapolis to New York. She didn't know anyone in NY. The relationship she moved there for had ended. Her company took a nose dive, because the financial crisis crept up and she didn't have her eye on the ball. Sheila tried to hide what was going on with her business and relationship. She didn't want anyone to see she was failing. Sheila became this really unhappy and angry person. One of her friends suggested she should try meditation.

Style of Leadership

Sheila leads by communication and authenticity.

What Are You Excited About?

They reformatted Women from the Boardroom from an event company to a membership platform five years ago. Sheila is continuing to develop this platform for growth for getting more women on corporate boards.

Her work has appeared on The Huffington Post, Erma Bombeck, Mothers Always Write, Better After 50, The Good Men Project and many others.

Playing Small Moment

Lee was really lost and desperate when everything came to a screeching halt. She felt like she had to go back thirty years. Lee was feeling ashamed and embarrassed that she lost everything in her life due to a man. Lee had to sell everything she owned just to be able to afford a run down apartment. She had to work five jobs just to get back on her feet again. One day Lee burst into tears thinking she was never going to get to walk on the path she was on before everything hit the fan.

The Wake Up Call

One of Lee’s aha moments was when she was at a marketing session for teachers. The keynote speaker sought her out at the break and told her she should be speaking professionally. Little by little she started connecting with like-minded people. She realized at that moment that she was fully back to life again. Lee dusted her self off and got back on the path. She hasn’t stopped writing since.

Lee’s style of leadership is relationship oriented. She relates to people and always empowers them. Lee never takes anything or anyone for granted. She also uses humor as a helpful breaking point for tension.

What Nearly Toppled Me

I did my first live webinar for Women Taking the Lead last week and I’m glad it’s done.

Don’t get me wrong. It was awesome. It was amazing. And the size and scope of it nearly toppled me.

And, now I know I can do it again.

The foundation has been created and each time I do a webinar it will be easier and I can identify ways to tweak it a little bit to constantly be improving.

Stretching to Accomplish New Things is Good

I was reflecting on this experience prior to doing the webinar while I was home visiting for Easter. I was trying to not to let the work and worry of the webinar interfere with the celebration.

Honestly, what gave me a little peace was the thought that it’s meant to be like this.

Am I supposed to stress myself out with each new thing? No.

I can see in retrospect some things I could have done to spread the work out more and to support myself.

But I (and you), if we want to live amazing lives, we have to find opportunities to stretch our current abilities. This is one of the ways in which we grow.

Sometimes life throws things at us and we’re forced to grow, whether we’re ready or not. But for the most part we have a choice in the areas we want to grow and how fast we want to grow.

How To Support Yourself While You Stretch

For myself, I’m a big fan of the Slight Edge philosophy; doing little things every single day to get just a little bit better.

For the webinar, when I wasn’t rushing at the end, I was watching a couple short videos each day and working on one or two slides at a time.

When I had to learn new software I would give myself more frequent and longer breaks because that is not my strong suit. I can learn new technology, and have a lot of fun with it once I do, but learning it takes effort and concentration. It’s not intuitive to me and frankly it makes me nervous at times.

But I do it, I take it slow, and I celebrate when it’s done.

I’ve got some steps you can take to just get started and feeling more comfortable stretching yourself in a new area.

Keep in mind, though I’m going to have you set a goal, the focus in these steps is not the goal, the focus is on mindset and forming new habits that will support you in attaining any goal.

Here are your steps:

  1. Identify something you want to accomplish

Something. Anything. Think of the life you’d rather be living and identify something you can start working towards now.

  1. Set a date by which you can reasonably accomplish this

Don’t make it too tight. Life happens and you don’t want to blame life events for the reason you didn’t hit your deadline. And not too far out either. Remember, the deadline provides motivation. If it’s too far out you won’t make this a priority.

  1. Identify an easy daily practice you can put into place

This will support you in working toward your goal.

It should take no more than 20 minutes a day though somewhere between 5 and 15 minutes is ideal.

  1. Get Someone In Your Corner

Who can you count on whom you can check in with, and that you feel comfortable being honest with, about your progress? That’s your accountability partner. Ask them if they are up for the task.

  1. Get started

Don’t put it off. There’s no better time than now.

Of course there will be other things you will have on your to do list to accomplish this goal but you need to look at this daily practice as the foundation. It will keep you on track and moving toward your goal even if life gets crazy.

Here’s an example from my life.

Identify a goal. I want to begin building a team this year and I know it’s going to start with a virtual assistant who can help me with tasks around the promotion of the episodes of Women Taking the Lead. Something that needs to happen first is getting sponsors for the podcast. This, like the webinar, is new and definitely out of my comfort zone but I know I can do it. I’ve got the media kit ready to go and I know other podcasters who have sponsors so I know I can ask them any questions as they come up for me.

Set a date. I think it’s very reasonable that I could have my first paid sponsor within 30 days.

Daily practice. A daily practice would start with making a list of brands that I think align with my mission and would benefit from being my sponsor. I’m looking for a win-win! Once that is done my daily practice would be to send 2 customized emails to potential sponsors.

Accountability partner. I already have an accountability partner, Kim, whom I check in with every Monday at 9 am.

Getting Started. Today, I’m going to spend 15-20 minutes researching companies that share my mission and that my audience would love. Tomorrow, I’ll create an email template that I’ll customize to each company that I reach out to so I’m not recreating the wheel so to speak with each email I send.

Now it’s your turn. Go through the steps until you have your foundation and you are ready to start. If you find getting started difficult start with something fun or light to ease into the process and get used to it.

What do you want to accomplish this year?

Margaret Hasna Kelsey is the Founder of Wave of Insight, which offers conscious leadership coaching and consulting, and she has authored Wave of Insight's Poetry and Prose on Facebook, with a global following of 25,000+. She’s mother to a 7-year-old boy, whom she adopted from Nepal. When asked what she loves most about working with individuals and groups, she'll tell you, "Watching that aha moment when true transformational learning takes place.”

The Wake Up Call

While Margaret was married and in the process of adopting, she realized her husband didn't want a family. She had to ask herself if she was going to be able to adopt and raise a family on her own as a single woman. Margaret had to assess whether she was limiting herself or she was being limited by an outside force.

Style of Leadership

Margaret’s leadership style stems from a few different places. She pays attention to which part of her is growing the most now, and which part needs to grow the most, and then she watches for which parts regress at that time. Margaret learned from a past mentor that patience is highly important as a leader and she emulates that in her life.

What Are You Excited About?

Margaret is putting together an online gallery so people can purchase different mediums of the artwork. She loves being able to see analytics that tell her when her artwork is shared or made as profile pictures and ultimately seeing her work resonate.

Stephen Woessner is CEO of Predictive ROI and the host of the brilliant Onward Nation podcast. He is the author of two bestselling books, The Small Business Owner’s Handbook to Search Engine Optimization and Increase Online Sales Through Viral Social Networking. His digital marketing insights have been featured in SUCCESS, Forbes, Entrepreneur, The Washington Post, Inc. Magazine and more. His agency blends education in very transparent ways for clients.

A Women Who Has Influenced Your Life

Stephen’s Grandmother, Julia, is a woman who has influenced his life. She was from Greece and her grandchildren called her Yia Yia. She worked side by side with her husband, raising 4 children and 10 grandchildren, while running their own restaurant. Yia Yia came to the US when she was 5 years old and her mother died during child birth shortly after this move. Julia’s father didn’t know how to raise kids, so he sent them to the orphanage and went back to Greece to find a new mother for them. The conditions inside the orphanage were horrific. Julia was a tenacious woman who overcame great odds to obtain her position in life.  She was loving, caring, hardworking, and compassionate. She also taught her children and grandchildren to be entrepreneurs that treat everyone with the respect and dignity they deserve.

What He Sees That Hold Women Back

The impostor syndrome – we are all victims of it. Stephen says you need to have an exorcism to get it out. The issues are: societal roles, peer pressures, and the traditional values or acceptances that may make women the victim. It’s that little voice which sits on your shoulder and says ‘who do you think you are to attempt something so awesome?’ You are doing that to yourself, more than the world is. Be scared and do it anyway!

What He Has Learned from Women

You can be compassionate and tough as nails, at the same time.

The Necessary Changes

Stephen says there are a couple of things that need to change. Women cannot get hung up on titles. Everyone within an organization can be a leader. Stop feeling sorry for yourself, and acknowledge the fact that you are one. Put on your big girl clothes and be a great one! Remember, you are always mentoring 24/7/365, there is never a break whether you acknowledge it or not.

After a successful career in Mutual Fund Operations as the Assistant Vice President of Corporate Quality, Jodi Flynn set off on a new adventure and founded her coaching business. Her specialty is partnering with women who experience self-doubt and feel overwhelmed to overcome stress, get organized, and start creating the business and the lifestyle they dreamed of having.

Her podcast, Women Taking the Lead, inspires women from humble beginnings to overcome self-doubt and lead with confidence, integrity and a sense of humor. The podcast has hit #1 in 3 categories of iTunes’ New and Noteworthy: Business, Careers, and Society and Culture.

Playing Small Moment

This happened after Jodi decided to not complete her Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology. She was looking in the newspaper back in 2000, for a job to pay the bills. She found jobs that paid from $22,000 to $24,000 and then there was a gap. She also saw jobs that paid $30,000 and up. She played small because she ended up going for the $22,000 job, which ended up paying a lot more than the $30,000 a year jobs, since she had been promoted over five times.

The Wake Up Call

Jodi’s ‘aha’ moment happened when she was reading a book called a New Earth, by Eckhart Tolle. He compared human consciousness to the evolution of a flower and stated that we are in a time where we as humans are experiencing a leap in consciousness. Just like the flower, the environment does not fully support it. The more people that experience this awakening, the more suitable the environment will become for more and more people to shift in consciousness. This made Jodi feel like she was on fire. She has so much energy that started flowing through her body. Jodi realized at that moment, this is why she was here.

Style of Leadership

Jodi is very nurturing, supportive, and naturally looks for the strengths/skills in others. She gets a thrill out of helping someone realize how capable they are. Jodi is a leader with high expectations. She is result oriented. Jodi’s favorite clients are the action takers.

Advice For Younger Self

Don't lose faith. Worry and despair represent symptoms of you trying to control things that you have no control over. Set your goals, do your best, find enjoyment, and trust that God is taking care of the rest.
