I'm just going to bottom line it. Taking care of yourself – body, mind, and soul – is the foundation of being and feeling successful.

People often dismiss this key component of success because they become overly focused on the end result – a new job, a career advancement, another degree or certification.

And if you're in my tribe of entrepreneurial minded, Type A, ambitious women, you know this is one of your stumbling blocks.

Success Starts with You

Anyone can push hard for an immediate goal. However, if you’re focused on success that will last, you're going to have to take care of yourself.

As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “The first wealth is health.”

Dr. Stephen Covey, author of the best-selling book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, calls it “Sharpen the Saw”.

Successful people develop and maintain a balance or focus in four areas of life: physical, social/emotional, mental, and spiritual.

When we renew ourselves continually in each of these four areas we enhance our ability to cope with the inevitable challenges that come at us.

Keep in mind that while self-care is key, it’s imperative you pay close attention to your habits – because your habits determine your success.

You can do all you want to take the best care of yourself– but if you’re not willing to honestly examine and alter your habits – don’t expect to get anywhere fast.

Go back to the last episode/post, The Secret to Being Successful With Ease, to help you get in the mindset to commit to forming new habits.

I'm going to focus on four key areas but I've also got a worksheet below that you can use to identify where you need focus on taking care of yourself.

Carrie Hartunian works with business owners and entrepreneurs to develop accelerated growth strategies in highly competitive industries. She creates and executes strategic growth plans,  directing integrations and marketing automation, as well as  manages projects and establishes benchmarks for success. Her expertise in fostering winning cultures, increased productivity and reducing costs in mission-driven environments are just a few of her recognized talents as a talented and accomplished leader.

Playing Small Moment

Carrie didn’t feel like she was playing an essential role at her family owned business but she had big aspirations to become significant. Her small moment came when her family’s company was purchased by a group of venture capitalists. The COO hired her for a short 6-month transition period. It was then that Carrie started to see her true value. She tapped into her special gifts and began acquiring other companies and moved into the advertising world with great success.

The Wake Up Call

Carrie was ripe for a wake up call. The position she was in didn’t give her a reason to mentally get out of bed in the morning. But as a single mom, she needed to be thoughtful in her decisions. When her discomfort grew to disabling, she dusted off her resume and accepted what was at that time a risky out of state opportunity to help an ad agency get off the ground. It was there she was able to surround herself with people she could learn from.

Style of Leadership

Carrie believes in inspiring enthusiasm in her team because it helps to motivate them towards goals. If a team doesn’t buy into a leader’s vision, then the plan won’t work. A leader must listen to the team and be open to changing their plan if a great idea comes out of brainstorming.

Current Leadership Challenge

Carrie’s current challenge is trying to scale her service-based business. It is a ‘which direction to lead her business’ type of challenge.

What Are You Excited About?

Carrie has been working with business people to elevate their brand by writing a book and getting it to rank on amazon. The book is designed to build the client’s authority, generate leads and gain a profit. She says there is nothing more exciting than telling a client they have made it to #1 bestseller in multiple categories.

Leadership Practice

Parenting taught Carrie how to overcome challenges in creative ways which made her a better leader. She also adapts her observations from people watching in to her leadership practice.

Steve Forbes, the Editor-In-Chief of Forbes Media has called him a “Grand Master” of communications skills and Elite Books has called him “One of the fifty most influential business thinkers today”.

Dave Frees is an attorney, author, entrepreneur and speaker who has lived a fascinating life that took him across the globe and exposed him to master communicators, persuaders, and negotiators in hundreds of nations and across many cultures. He is a master of teaching enhanced communication and how to go from being persuasive to being truly influential

A Woman Who Has Influenced Your Life

Dave lives and works in a very estrogen-rich environment but his earth-mother wife has the biggest impact on him as a leader. Dave is normally the fiery one and his wife has a more subtle way of dealing with things in their relationship. An example of this is when Dave increases the sound of his voice intentionally with their children. His wife thought it had gone a little too far so she calmly pointed out that raising his voice did not seem to be an effective way of communicating with the kids. She pointed it out several times until Dave realized she was right and promptly stopped raising his voice.

What He Sees That Hold Women Back

Dave notices that many intellectual women, especially in helping professions, do not charge clients what they are worth. He says they seem to be afraid to take credit for their hard work. And, they are often surprised to learn that if they don’t charge people, they will not believe the service offered has value.

What He Has Learned from Women

Women have taught Dave two very important things. One is the skill of being adaptable in their communication style and they are good at making sure their message is heard which led to him writing his book, The Language of Parenting. The second is the skill of patience when communicating.

The Necessary Changes

Dave sees many women who are leaders or in the process of becoming leaders who impose limitations on themselves. He believes that if they overcome internal objections they can hone in on their leadership skills.

What Are You Excited About?

Dave’s new program, Persuasion to Influence, has him really excited. He is building and testing different aspects of his program at his live events.

Inspirational Quote

No plan survives contact with the enemy. So, plan early and often.” ~Dave Frees

In this episode, I welcome Michelle Dutro to the show. Michelle was a military veteran by the age of 22 and she joined the fire department at the age of 35.  Michelle has always been determined to pursue her dreams. She has spent more than a decade working in a field of preventative medicine which has spurred her to emphasize the importance of good health. Her goal is to inspire and motivate others to pursue their passions in life.

On the way home from school in 7th grade, Michelle saw someone being bullied. She believes that witnessing someone being treated badly and not do anything about it is the most intolerable form of evil she can imagine. She vows never to allow another person go through what that person went through. It is her mission to be a voice for those who don’t have one.

Playing Small Moment

Michelle doesn’t feel she has a small moment; she just wants to help people find their special gift and follow their special purpose. She has been that way her entire life. She believes that not following a purpose in life is not an option. She helps people to remember what things they loved doing before society, parents, or culture got in the way.

The Wake Up Call

For Michelle, there was no landmark epiphany. She lives in a constant state of evaluation about how she can do better and how she can do more. She decided to become a firefighter because she felt it was the most effective way for her to help those who need it most. Analyzing how she handled emergencies led her to educate people on how to avoid emergencies in the first place. Michele knew her work should focus on prevention.

Style of Leadership

BOLD and confident. Michelle doesn’t mince words and she doesn’t hold back. She says there is a very big difference between being nice and being kind. She defines kindness as seeing someone for who they truly are and then helping them become who they need to be. Placating people through being nice only enables them to stay where they are or to play small.

Current Business Challenge

Michelle’s biggest challenge is the linear thinking required for paperwork. She is aware that being organized is not her gift and often finds herself putting these types of tasks on the back burner.

What Are You Excited About?

Michelle is excited to launch her online course and new book. It’s a life reboot for people who feel stuck or uncertain about why they are here in this life.

Today I have the pleasure of speaking with Alicia Cuello, a National Conference Speaker, a facilitator, and coach who specializes in non-verbal communication. She has spent over 20 years reading and interpreting body language and she is the host of the popular podcast series Body Language for Sales Success. She earned her Master of Human Resource Management degree from the University of Houston.

When Alicia describes her unimaginable childhood it might make you think that she and her four sisters would never have amounted to anything. But when you see the businesswoman Alicia is today, you truly understand how resilient she is in every aspect of her life and career. In fact, she still uses some of the skills she learned as a young girl to propel her forward in her industry.

Despite Alicia’s past, she has been able to overcome all obstacles with the help of women mentors early in her career. It was the first time someone cared about what she could accomplish and she bent over backwards to be the best that she could be, for them.

Her goal is to make the world a better place through a combination of HR and body language.

Playing Small Moment

Alicia’s mentor, Lynn told her, “You remind me of myself but you are screwing it up.” Lynn was a Vice President and the head of nursing at her place of employment. She would meet with Alicia one-on-one and help her to get her act together. Alicia says “Lynn saw something in me. She made me believe I had so much more to offer.” Alicia’s small moment happened when she allowed Lynn to help her believe in herself.

The Wake Up Call

Alicia had spent 20+ years in Human Resources where the pay was good but the work was starting to crush her soul. She stayed a while longer, knowing she wanted out. So, she made the decision to get a business coach and with his help she started Underlying Communications and eventually left corporate America.

Style of Leadership

Alicia isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty. She steps back to observe and absorb how the game is being played before she makes a leadership decision. She believes power can be found in silence. When she is ready to effectively lead, she leads by doing. She feels more like one of the pack than someone who stands at the helm barking orders.

Current Business Challenge

Alicia says maneuvering through all the noise is her current business challenge. She has been sharing on all of the social platforms and even video-blogging for some time, but the time has come for her to create proposals and network herself and her business. She says the process is like an additional full-time job.

What Are You Excited About?

Alicia is excited about a new opportunity to give a presentation to two large, national HR organizations in San Bernardino. It gives her the opportunity to turn a bad situation into something that benefits people.

Welcome to this 16th bonus episode for Women Taking the Lead.

In the last bonus episode I talked about how it’s so important to have a picture in your mind of what success is going to look like and a sense of how you are going to feel when you get there.

I also did a guided exercise to help you with that so if you have not listened to that episode yet go back and listen to Bonus Episode: A Future You’ll Be Excited About.

I’m talking to you now about commitment but it’s really important you have something worth committing to.

When you have that really important something come back to this episode as I guide you to the next step.

At the beginning stages of forming what success will look and feel like you have the thought, but no action or very little action to back it up. If in the past you stayed in this phase you probably noticed that you were just wishing and wishing, and then you noticed all the time going by with no wish granted.

Every now and again you may take tentative steps toward this dream. You try something new; you buy lottery tickets or you try to form a new habit that will get you better results. If it doesn't pan out you go back to wishing.

If you want to achieve that success you imagine it will require changes; changes you must commit to.

Today I am pleased to talk with C S Wurzberger, also known as the Green Up Girl. C S is on an important mission to inspire people to care for the earth and its animals. She offers earth-friendly, adventure-packed activity packs for children, teens and adults so they can safely explore the earth and its animals. She does this by hosting podcasts and publishing a series of how to Greenup guides. She is also the founder and director of Zoocademy, the teaching zoo that travels to you. C S loves guiding children, teens and adults on fun and virtual expeditions to meet exotic and endangered animals. She enjoys connecting with organizations working to save endangered animals from extinction and sharing simple ways people can join in to live a greener, cleaner healthier lifestyle.

C S started giving nature classes when she was 12 and that was just the beginning. For the past 12 years, she has been the Director of a 150 acre petting zoo with 300 animals, and she previously owned a web development/Internet marketing company. She has published 5 different books on marketing as part of the Wildly Profitable Marketing series for related industries. Her name, The Green Up Girl started in Vermont. When she was young every first Saturday of May was Green Up Day in Vermont. This day is for people in the community to get outside and help the environment by picking up trash. C S says trash on the side of the road has always bothered her, so much so that she drove her mother crazy. No matter where they were, she made her mother stop so she could pick up trash along the road.

Playing Small Moment

C S found it difficult, at first, to think about what her small moment was. And, then it hit her like a lightning bolt when she realized she has been playing small her entire life. She knew when she was only seven she wanted to inspire people to take care of the earth and its animals but she always let her various careers get in the way of her true path. When her soul started crying out for attention is when she decided to follow the path of her life’s mission.

The Wake Up Call

The last few months have been life changing for C S. Her mother’s death and an out-of-the-blue real estate listing reminded her of all of the skills she had acquired during her life and how they could now be used to run her mission-driven company.

Style of Leadership

C S is a “let’s get it done” type of leader. She is all about accomplishing her client’s ultimate goal and making it happen.

What Are You Excited About?

Her new Zoocademy project is what has got C S in a tizzy. She is excited to get earth and animal education in front of all the children she can. Plus, she vows to keep the entire project dutifully licensed.

Current Business Challenge

C S is actually having trouble sleeping because she is so passionate about the work she is doing. She’s really hoping to find a balance between her self-care practices, meditation, and her strong desire to move her projects forward.

Book to Develop Leadership

The Success Principles - 10-Year Anniversary Issue by Jack Canfield

Advice For Younger Self

C S would go back and advise her younger self to stay focused, trust herself and not to let anyone or anything derail her.

Karen Jehanian is the Owner/President of KMJ Consulting Inc., an innovative transportation engineering consulting firm located outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The firm focuses on improving mobility. She began living her true passion as an entrepreneur at 8-years-old. She likes to be the best version of herself and continually improve, while helping others to do the same. In her spare time, she volunteers, reads, plays golf and takes long walks on the beach.

At a young age, Karen was surrounded by entrepreneurs and a very courageous mother. Her Grandparents started from scratch, making use of their fantastic work ethic and family values. Karen knew by the 7th grade she wanted to own her own business. She landed in civil engineering and went to the co-op program at Drexel University. One of the reasons she started her company was because she wanted to create a more friendly and productive culture with an atmosphere that inspires creativity and where the people care as much about each other as they do their product and their clients.

Playing Small Moment

Karen’s biggest small moment was brought on by an uncomfortable feeling she had. At first, she didn’t believe she could run a business on her own. She thought she needed a partner, but just before they incorporated she realized she was making a big mistake and could succeed on her own.

The Wake Up Call

Karen says sometimes you have to hear the same story repeatedly for it to sink in. As a woman, Karen tended to think ‘this is happening because I am a woman’. But one day, she shared a problem she was having with a group of male colleagues and someone said: “Oh, I have that problem on a daily basis”. So, she asked him how he had dealt with it and he responded: “I tell the person to get out of my office and to handle the problem themselves”. It changed her life. She accepted that she did not have to accept responsibility for everything someone puts in front of her, she could just say no.

Style of Leadership

Karen prefers a collaborative leadership style. She likes to envision her team in a row boat and they are all rowing in the same direction towards their goals.

What Are You Excited About?

Karen is excited to start teaching a course in Entrepreneurship at Drexel’s Close School of Entrepreneurship. She says that teaching has helped her to expand her mind and to better understand people.

Tips to Become a Better Leader

Karen says her daily meditation and prayer practices make her calmer which also makes her a better leader. Also, she sleeps well when she expresses her gratitude.

Paula Gosney is a writer, businesswoman, feminist, warrior, speaker and mom. At 11-years-old she was sent to boarding school, and during her teenage years she became the victim of sexual assault. Her 20’s were spent seeking pain relief through a mix of hard drugs, alcohol, and personal development masters. She established her first business at 21. Her current endeavor, Belief School, is an accumulation of all she has learned, taught and lived. Her personal vision is to help other women heal more quickly, accept love earlier in their lives and contribute to their own lives sooner. Much like what she would have done, had she been exposed to the principles she teaches today sooner.

“As women, we need to celebrate our broken bits and stop the righteousness, stop the blaming and hold each other up. Because we are bloody awesome.” - Paula Gosney

Playing the Small Moment

Women succumb to two types of fear. One is an intuition-based fear which comes from deep in our subconscious. It is a healthy, survival-based fear. “Women are taught to ignore our gut feelings,” Paula says, “but what we should be doing is giving ourselves permission to trust this fear”. The second type of fear is one we should not allow ourselves to fall prey to, as it is one of the greatest poisons of our society. It is when we feel this fear telling us we cannot do something or we are not good enough that we need to embrace the moment and know that we are not the voices in our heads.

The Wake Up Call

Paula’s wakeup call came during some of her darkest days. She was listening to her inner victim and living the life it chose for her. One day, a profound thing happened as she was sitting in her car. Almost mystically, the clouds parted, the sun hit her shoulders and she thought “Wait, I get to choose how my life will be”. She found it empowering and now teaches others that if we stop listening to our inner victim we will become creative, solution-focused and powerful.

Style of Leadership

Paula believes in a service based leadership approach and leading by example. She says “we have to be the lighthouse and light the way for others by owning our own mistakes.” She adds “the world around us is a reflection of who we are being.”

What Are You Excited About?

Paula is bursting with excitement over her new book The Fuck Off Handbook for Healing and Celebrating Your Broken Bits. It’s just now coming together but she already knows it’s really good. It is a practical guide about shedding shame and owning our experiences. She adds that this book may not be the last as she certainly has 1 or 2 more books in her.

Leadership Challenge

Paula faces the challenge of moving into a bigger mindset. In her other businesses, she has always done everything herself. Her new project requires more funding and more partners. Everything is expanding. She is presently adopting a THINK BIG mentality and moving past previous challenges.

Book to Develop Leadership

The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer

Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion by Sam Harris

Advice For Younger Self

Paula says she would grab her 16-year-old self by the shoulders and say “This is not about you. This has nothing to do with you. You get to choose your story.” and “Define what gives you satisfaction for yourself, don’t let it be defined by the people around you.”

Inspirational Quotes

Paula finds it beneficial to choose one of her limiting beliefs and then write her own success quote around it.

“Be the change you want to see in the world.” – Gandhi

Welcome, welcome I’m excited to have you here with me because I’m talking about something I really enjoy talking about: imagination.

I’ve talked previously about how the women I work with all have a vision of themselves achieving success. There is some image they have in their mind that represents the moment when they’ve made it.

Not only do they see themselves achieving success they imagine what it is going to feel like when it happens.

Because it’s so real for them they live like it’s a foregone conclusion. They might be facing obstacles now but they live like it’s a matter of time and hard work.

That success is theirs to be had.

It’s the image and the story in their mind that makes it so real and why they are able to keep going even if their current reality doesn’t support their vision.

In a related article in Entrepreneur magazine three examples are given of this phenomenon:

  • “Boxing legend Muhammad Ali was always stressing the importance of seeing himself victorious long before the actual fight.
  • As a struggling young actor, Jim Carrey used to picture himself being the greatest actor in the world.
  • Michael Jordan always took the last shot in his mind before he ever took one in real life.”

The question is posed: If you can’t picture yourself achieving success in your mind how will you do it in real life?

Sometimes I struggle with this myself but I’ve found it helpful to get some guidance so for the rest of this episode I’m going to guide you through seeing yourself to success.

If you are on the go pause it here because you’re going to want to come back to this and frankly this would be dangerous to do if you were driving.

Find a quiet spot where you can sit in solitude, away from any distractions.

Guided Exercise

I hope that helped you to see and feel the kind of success you want in your life. If you struggled with this exercise, that’s okay. Go for a walk, go about your day and come back and do it again.

Sometimes if there is too much noise in our head it’s hard to really get into an exercise like this. Shake it off and try again another time when you don’t feel the world pulling at you.

I also want you to take the information you got and start recording it.

I have a worksheet that you can access in the blog that accompanies this episode.

Go to womentakingthelead.com/future and you’ll find it right at the bottom of the post.

If you think this will be helpful for other women share this episode. If you don’t have an image and a feeling of what success will look like you’ll continue to trudge along hoping one day things will get better.

I don’t want that for you. I want you to be mission-driven because when you have a mission you have confidence and energy and a clear direction to take.

I love feedback so please share your experience with this on the blog or anywhere you found this episode. I’m here to support you and cheer you on.

Thank you so much for joining me today and here’s to your success!

Emily Mottram grew up in Pennsylvania and received her degree from Penn State University. In 2007, she and her husband moved to Maine where her passion for functional, yet beautiful spaces led Emily to start Mottram Architecture and start pursuing design with an emphasis on cold climate building. She is licensed in Maine, Pennsylvania, and New York. Her burning desire is to design simple, attractive, durable homes that use space efficiently but in a soulful and creative way.

Playing Small Moment

Emily's playing small moment was when she realized she was going to have challenges; since her degree in Architecture is a male-dominated field. However, Emily made a decision that she wasn't going to let that define her.

The Wake Up Call

In 2009, after starting her business, Emily took on work as an Energy Consultant; instead of going full force into her company. She was working long hours; once she made the decision to cut back her workload; more opportunities started to present themselves in her business.

Style of Leadership

Emily's style of leadership is learning and analyzing what she has learned. Emily doesn't care how she gets to a destination as long as it leads to the right place in the end.

Current Leadership Challenge

Emily's biggest challenge thus far is educating people. She is trying to get the knowledge out there using terms people will understand.

What Are You Excited About?

Emily is excited about her partnership with Clear Conscience Construction in Cumberland; they have partnered to build zero-energy prototype houses. The first one has been up and live since October 2015, the second house is going up right now.

Leadership Practice

Emily doesn’t like to multitask; she believes in putting a 100% focus on the project she is working on.

Book to Develop Leadership

Advice For Younger Self

Today we are talking about Time vs. Energy.

I don’t know if you can claim with full confidence that you have plenty of time but I have yet to hear that said or see it written anywhere.

We’re all wanting more time and we never seem to get it but I’m going to propose we’re looking for the wrong thing.

Rather than time, which is largely out of your control – how many of us have wished for an extra hour or two in the day? It never happens, does it?

If you’re like me trying to control time, you take things off your schedule only to find other things have filled the gap and you still don’t have any extra time, you’ve only got a new routine.

Rather than wishing for more time, enough time, I propose you seek to have more energy.

The coaching process I use with my clients is called the Core Energy Coaching process. At its very root is the science that we are all made of energy and that our beliefs, thoughts, feelings and actions have an energetic signature that either depletes or restores us.

All day long we are thinking thoughts that either gives us energy or we are thinking thoughts that take our energy away.

This phenomenon was written about in the book, The Power of Full Engagement, by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz.

The subtitle of this book is “Managing Energy, Not Time, Is the Key to High Performance and Personal Renewal.”

How many times have you carved out time to work on a project only to find when that open time came that you were too cranky, tired, hungry or restless to focus on the task and get it done?

The reason you couldn’t focus is your energy was tapped out. You needed to do something to restore your energy before you could use any on your project.

These are the times you find yourself reaching for your phone or going on the computer to check facebook or watch Youtube videos. One of my favorites is of a baby panda bear sneezing. It’s hilarious.

We instinctively do this because we want to find something that will calm us down, let us check out for a while or find a good laugh.

These strategies work in the short-term but they are not the best source of energy so you end up spending precious time trying to gain a small amount of energy to make it to the end of the day.

The key is to keep your energy high so when the time presents itself to get something done, you are all-in and ready to go.

Rather than constantly responding reactively to lost energy try adding in some activities that will proactively renew your energy and/or prevent your energy from getting stolen.

Here is a list of things that proactively renew your energy and obviously their opposites are the energy stealers. I’ve broken them down into categories but let me be clear, they all overlap.

Physical energy: sleep, good nutrition, exercise or activity, stretching, conscious breathing, and good hydration.

Mental energy: keep life simple; minimize decision-making and make decisions in a timely manner. Read books, watch videos and have conversations that stimulate your mind (TED talks are great for this), and actively seek to communicate clearly to prevent confusion and ask that those around you do the same.

Emotional and spiritual energy: activities that bring you joy, spending time with happy, positive people, spending time with animals and being out in nature, being of service and taking time for reflection.

Would you add anything to this list? Go to the post that accompanies this episode and leave a comment letting us know what you do to restore your energy and keep it high.

I hope this was helpful and helps you to have a more energetic week ahead.

Thank you all for being a part of this journey and here’s to your success.

Playing Small Moment

In October 2014, Caitlin realized she was playing small when her husband would tell her about the information he was learning in his entrepreneurial classes. Caitlin didn’t think what she had to offer was going to be able to help people tremendously. It’s often the things that you are great at that you undervalue the most.

The Wake Up Call

November 2014, Caitlin finally bought the domain name and wrote the eBook. She didn’t want to put too much time and effort into it at first because Caitlin didn’t realize how much of an impact she could have on others.

Style of Leadership

Caitlin is friendly and doesn’t like to put herself above others. She is all about living life humbly.

A lifelong entrepreneur, inventor, author and coach, Don Hutcheson, created the Discover Your Talent—Do What You Love podcast to help people find their talents and use them to build a career of success, satisfaction and freedom. Don has never had a “boss” and has created 6 innovative companies in advertising, publishing, coaching and career planning – and now on the Internet – over the last 35 years.

A Women Who Has Influenced Your Life

The most influential women in Don’s life were his mother and grandmother. In his experience, men can learn about compassion, creativity, and collaboration from women, which are the defining traits of great leaders.

What He Sees That Hold Women Back

Don says he noticed, unfortunately that when women speak up they get called the B-word. It’s about balance for men and women finding a life of success, satisfaction, and freedom. Life shouldn’t be all about money, power, control, and wealth; it should be about spiritual, emotional, and metaphysical nurturing. Identifying what success means to you and what leadership looks like in your life.

What He Has Learned from Women

According to Don it is difficult for women because they deal with biases. Women need to realize what the best strategy is in an intelligent, wise, and present way by making a contribution and getting their needs met without having to sellout or giving in.

The Necessary Changes

The growing awareness of the Internet has a profound effect on us all. People can see highly articulate women stepping out of their box with the use of social media.

What Are You Excited About?

Don’s business partner and long-time ally Jan created the Discover Your Own Talent Podcast about a year ago with over hundreds of episodes on people sharing their life’s journeys. They are going to be offering membership groups for different segments, a variety of courses, and tools for subscribers to access.

Sharon Haver teaches everyday women to look like they’re worth it, so that they can create a relevant, authentic modern image to earn + deserve 6-figure pay days. Halfway through her three-decade career in style, she left the lure of being a New York fashion stylist working with top models & actresses on photo shoots to helping working women make the most of what they’ve got. She founded FocusOnStyle.com in 1999. Although her impressive resume looks like a who’s who of media household names, her heart is with helping entrepreneurs refine their chic style to confidently pull their look together with ease.

Playing Small Moment

Sharon couldn’t do it all and needed to learn how to delegate and work with a team. So she ended up hiring a business coach.

The Wake Up Call

The light bulb went off when Sharon was working seven days a week/fifteen hour days; she noticed she was doing all the grunt work in her business. Sharon slowly began to realize she needed to hire responsible people that could do their job effectively to help her when needed.

Style of Leadership

Sharon is straightforward and to the point. She practices what she preaches.

Jen MacQuarrie is a Habit Success Coach and founder of Bright Habits. She helps people achieve their biggest life goals step by step, one habit at a time. Jen understands the power of habits because she turned her own life around by creating a 5 AM wake up habit for daily exercise and personal development. Jen is also a musician and lead vocalist with her band Magnetic. Jen loves helping others to discover their passions and create habits that will support their success.

Playing Small Moment

As a wife and mom with a corporate position in 2011, Jen found herself with a victim mindset, just moving through the motions. She was not participating in anything that she was passionate about. Jen was basically living to please everyone else, without any time for herself. Eventually this took a toll on her mentally and she became resentful. After some soul-searching, Jen watched an Oprah video about finding your life purpose and was inspired to make some changes.

The Wake Up Call

Once Jen had seen The 5am Wake Up, that became the biggest moment of change for her. After that video, she knew what she had to do to change and began her new morning ritual: setting her alarm, doing her workout and practicing with her guitar.

Style of Leadership

Jen leads with quiet confidence. She would describe herself as an ambivert who leans more towards introvert. This allows Jen to listen and understand what people are going through so she can gently guide them. Jen is also big on leading by example.

What Are You Excited About?

Jen has started a one-on-one coaching to help her students change their habits on a small level so that they can achieve a goal that may seem out of reach. She is also showing people the power of the 5am Wake Up.

Leadership Practice

The 5am Wake Up makes Jen a better leader. She is always learning, reading, attending trainings to better her knowledge to help her clients.

Advice For Younger Self

Don’t worry so much what everyone else thinks. Jen was a people pleaser and would worry about everyone else’s opinions. Go forward with the things you are most passionate about.

Welcome to this community of women taking the lead!

Our private facebook group is getting more action. I am getting better at starting conversations and you lovely ladies have been very generous in sharing your experiences, practices and resources in the group. It’s like we have our own mini podcast episodes going on there. So, if you’re not in there yet and are interested in joining in on the conversation go to https://www.facebook.com/groups/womentl/.

Sponsorship Opportunities

I also wanted to mention that I am looking for businesses who want to collaborate in supporting Women Taking the Lead and getting their own name out there in the process. I’m already in discussions with a couple of women who I would really love to introduce you to so keep your fingers crossed. If this is an opportunity that interests you go to https://womentakingthelead.com/sponsor-opportunities/

Full Disclosure

I am scared to go big but I want it so bad!

Can you relate to that?

Like a lot of you I know I am capable of so much more but the fear of the unknown and what life would look like if I started playing even bigger causes me to hold back and keep it to myself.

And here’s the bold truth, said openly and directly: I would love to work with you.

I want to be a partner with you in your journey to the top. I want to help you discover your superpowers, identify and honor your values and challenge you to do the next scary thing, knowing I’m cheering you on the whole way.

I’ve been working with women all over the globe. Online video conferencing is a magical thing and allows us to have virtual face-to-face conversations, no matter where we live.

Some things my clients say about me is that I instill a belief in themselves that they didn’t have before working with me; a belief and a confidence that they are fully capable to achieve their goals and a certainty that they will.

What My Clients Tell Me

My superpower is identifying and helping other people to see their own superpowers. And when you own your superpowers and realize the value they have it boosts your confidence and makes you want to go right out and use those superpowers.

My clients also tell me I help them to get focused.

There are so many different strategies and actions we can take to try to hit our goals but which ones will yield the best results for you, with the least amount of effort so you can either increase your bandwidth or find more personal time?

When you are not diverting your energy in too many places you can produce more results.

I work with entrepreneurial women who feel called to something greater.

She has a vision of success that she has not yet attained.

What I’ve come to realize is my clients don’t just want to do well; they want to be in the upper ranks. They want to be the expert in their industry, the person everyone else looks up to. They work really hard, they know their stuff and they in turn want to help others to achieve as well.

This woman comes to me because she’s frustrated. Although she is in a place where those around her would congratulate her, she hasn’t hit that level yet that would signify to her that she has “made it.”

She usually finds her current tasks to be tedious and boring. She’s feeling a calling, a compulsion to “do more” so the everyday tasks remind her that she’s not there yet.

She’s getting restless and looking for distractions. She may be starting to lean into the quick coping methods of food, alcohol, shopping or exercise.

She’s feeling overworked. She’s trying so hard to play bigger with very traction it’s leaving her exhausted.

She has high standards and high expectations of herself and that projects out onto others so she gets annoyed when other people aren’t doing their part. You’ll hear her say things like, “I just want them to do their job” or “why can’t they just do what they said they would do.”

What Got You Here Won’t Get You There.

The success strategy that has always worked before and gotten her this far won’t get her any further.

She has to change her mindset so she can change her strategy, and she needs to overcome some fears.

My question to you is, are you this woman?

Because this is exactly where I come in and can be of assistance.

I can help you tease out of your current strategy exactly what’s working and what’s not working and together we create a new strategy customized to get you the results you are looking for.

I would love to partner with you!

If this fired you up or made you really scared go to womentakingthelead.com/coaching to get started.

If this description doesn’t exactly match you, no worries. My larger mission is to support all women to own their power and step up as leaders in whatever area of their life they would like to make a difference and that’s what this podcast is all about.

Thank you all for being a part of my journey and here’s to your success!

Melinda Chen is a sales coach, helping female entrepreneurs sell to big clients. She is also a sales executive with an impressive sales track record of 8 figures. Her company, Women Making Big Sales, allows female entrepreneurs to start connecting and sell to big clients in 5 weeks. When she first started her sales career after university, she wanted to know everything about selling. So, she spent years reading over 20 books in sales, made over 5,000 cold calls and worked with agents, reps and corporate clients around the world. Since then, she has mastered the art of selling to big companies and made sales in the Americas, Europe and Asia, covering a wide range of industries. She is inspired to help women take control of their lives by going for big clients, closing important deals and dramatically expanding their business.

Playing Small Moment

Melinda went through many struggles when she first started selling. She was fresh out of college and working with people that had been in the industry for years. Melinda was nervous while attending a networking event and she even made up cards for talking points. Melinda was getting treated like she was the new kid on the block, so to avoid attending these events she began cold calling. Melinda learned she didn’t have to take things so personally and that the reason they treated her that way was because she was the new kid.

The Wake Up Call

Melinda was the queen of the cold calls, but she wasn’t reaching her sales goals. On a rainy night, while still at the office, she ran into one of the senior executives. He asked her how things were going, and she explained her process. The executive told her it was taking the same amount of time for his sales. He told her not to waste her time going after the small clients and to go for the larger ones instead.

Style of Leadership

Working with a lot of female entrepreneurs, Melinda learned demonstrating things is far more teachable than telling.

What Are You Excited About?

Heart of Sales is a 5-week program where Melinda shows people how to sell step-by-step.

Leadership Practice

Suzanne Doyle-Ingram is a best-selling author of 7 books, and she has written or co-written a total of 13 books. She has also helped over a hundred business professionals get published by bringing together the collaborative efforts of experts in various fields that contribute to one book on a specific topic. Suzanne has had tremendous success with this model.

In addition, she also coaches and trains individuals and existing authors on how to write and publish a book and how to use that book as leverage to increase their visibility, open doors for speaking engagements, grow their brand and business, and much more. She lives on the West Coast of Canada with her husband James and three kids ages 9, 12 and 14.

Playing Small Moment

Suzanne recalls playing it small by not knowing her value, and the value of what she could do. When Suzanne was approached to help create an entire course, she jumped at the opportunity. Creating this course took up much of her schedule and without a written agreement she was not compensated appropriately. Suzanne created this course in hopes of someday making money, when she should have charged up front for the hard work it would require.

The Wake Up Call

When Suzanne first started her Expert Author program, one of her privately coached students forwarded her an email containing quite the testimonial. The student raved about how her book was guaranteeing her business success. This prompted Suzanne to notice that she had all of the proof needed to spread the word about her course.

Style of Leadership

As described by one of her past students, Suzanne is a coach, a best friend and a mom all rolled into one. She tries to be nice and encouraging, but also sets deadlines and follows up frequently to make sure her students are on target.

What Are You Excited About?

Suzanne is currently working on writing multiple books. Her and twelve professionals are writing a book on mortgage, she is ghost writing a realtor book and an entrepreneur book and is looking for students for her private coaching.

Leadership Practice

Suzanne is continually learning. Even though she knows more than her clients do, Suzanne is always learning to help her clients as much as she can.

Playing Small Moment

Fabienne was scared to put herself out there for fear of what others would say. Silencing her true self, she struggled to fit in and please everyone. While in a mastermind group, she clashed with another entrepreneur because she saw herself not as skilled as the other women, despite all of their similarities. This caused a rift that couldn’t be repaired during their project.

The Wake Up Call

Fabienne’s wakeup call wasn’t just one day, but a series of events to expose who she really was. Her business partner was a great influence on her life and business skills. Fabienne realized what she was expressing was only a small percentage of who she was. Shocking to her, once she was acting like herself people were accepting her and she started embracing her true self.

Susan Morris is a condominium developer in Portland, Maine and Principal of NewHeight Group, a firm specializing in providing marketing, branding and business strategy to organizations developing new products and services, or repositioning existing ones. Susan is a Maine Angel and is actively engaged in Maine Startup and Create Week, Women Standing Together, TopGun and the House of Genius. She has built and exited from several businesses.

Prior to having her own businesses, Susan worked for Marriott International for 13 years. Susan is co-author of a college textbook, Hospitality Sales: A Marketing Approach and serves as a speaker, adjunct professor and facilitator.

Playing Small Moment

During her Marriott career, Susan was the account manager for very large accounts, handling all aspects of their development and strategies. The man who replaced her when she relocated to a new position packaged up her work, claiming it as his own, and teaching presentations about it all throughout Marriott. Looking back, she viewed her work as not fully complete and realized that a lot of women tend to do the same.

The Wake Up Call

There were two instances during her career with Marriott where Susan was up for a job against men, where she was the more qualified candidate that didn’t get the job. When Susan inquired why she was not chosen for the job, her boss informed her that the man was married and had two kids to put through college. Susan realized as you go higher in a company, there tends to be more people who think the same and they don’t like it when you challenge those thoughts.

Style of Leadership

Susan believes in rallying people to believe in her vision and see what their part is in that vision. She is an exceedingly verbal person and quite proactive in throwing out ideas, recognizing that it gives people a chance to react. Susan prides herself on being able to change her mind and be convinced to do so.

What Are You Excited About?

Susan is excited about a new condominium, Luminato, with a new theme of living light. This condominium will bring about new concepts of living and the idea that if you live in a bright space, you can live in a smaller space. They will be including new amenities, such as a guest room you would see in a hotel and a community room to do your work or hang out in. Something else that excites Susan is that there are more female buyers than male buyers now.
