As CEO of Successful Culture, Marissa helps CEOs master the three most critical aspects of business growth: leadership development, strategy formulation and execution, and organizational culture assessment and improvement. Marissa also helps CEOs build the supporting communities they need to grow, including advisory boards and CEO roundtables. Successful Culture ensures organizations have the strongest internal infrastructures and external support systems required to build their greatest organizations, and reach their greatest potential.

Playing Small Moment

When Marissa worked for a company before starting her own business, she was a protégé to the CEO. She had built a business case about why she deserved a raise and the CEO told her she would never be worth more than $34K to his company. For a moment, Marissa thought maybe I am only worth a certain amount. She then remembered her mother saying “Never let anyone else determine your value.”

The Wake Up Call

After a government initiative to only accept lowest-cost providers, Marissa decided her values were not alignment with this style of business, so she left for her own company.

Style of Leadership

Marissa is a servant leader. She believes in a supreme service model for those who work for her and those she works for.

What Are You Excited About?

Marissa’s book, Built to SCALE, helps companies build advisory boards. She is excited to work with CEOs to implement the SCALE model. She also is introducing new roundtables to an existing project, and working on her third book.

Current Business Challenge

Marissa has a tremendous vision for successful culture, and her biggest challenge is to execute all of the many pieces she has planned.

Your Support System

Marissa has a dedicated team of advisors, a Mastermind group, and an EO forum, and her girlfriends are her lifeline of emotional and moral support.

Leadership Practice

Marissa intentionally educates herself, and is constantly aware of the information she takes in.

As a lifelong pianist, Jennifer Eklund has embodied the American entrepreneurial spirit since she was a teenager. She worked as a performer and teacher for twenty years before diving head-on into running her music book publishing company, Piano Pronto Publishing, full-time, starting in 2014. A trailblazer in the evolving print music industry, Eklund is an avid composer of educational piano music and now represents and publishes the works of a growing number of independent composers.

Playing Small Moment

Jennifer says for musicians small moments can come on an almost daily basis. She had created a curriculum she felt needed to be seen in the publishing industry. She accepted many rejection letters before standing her ground and questioning them on why they thought the world didn’t need it.

The Wake Up Call

Jennifer had a contract meeting with a major publisher which made her feel like she would be signing away her life. They edited her piece of music and took all the fun out of it. She knew at that moment she needed to stay independent so she would have control over her own work.

Style of Leadership

Jennifer has a very personal and hands-on leadership style.

What Are You Excited About?

After a summit, Jennifer offered to mentor someone she knew from social media. The venture has since turned into her core business at Piano Pronto. She is excited to create a loyal community of composers who wish to publish their works.

Today, for this bonus episode, I want to talk to you about bartering. This topic is relevant if you have a business or not, so stick with me.

First, let’s start with selling. The idea of selling, for many women, is an icky thing. We are taught as young girls to be of service and to give for the sake of giving. Usually when we were transacting with money the price was set by someone else and we were not to haggle over it.

And as a coach, the idea that I was selling conversation – something I gave away for free all the time – that was even more difficult.

I remember when I became a newbie coach there was a lot of advice and opinions on what to charge for services and how to have those conversations. I remember being told not to barter my services; that my services are a valuable commodity and I needed to respect that. I can see how this advice was well intended but I have evolved as a coach and a business owner and I want to share my new understanding with you in the hopes that it is helpful to you and gives you some freedom.

Playing Small Moment

The last time Boom felt like she was playing small was in the corporate world. She says they almost set up the environment for people to play small by hiding their creativity and not being themselves.

The Wake Up Call

Boom was working at her previous job when she planned an overseas vacation. Shortly before she was ready to leave, the management team told her about an upcoming launch she would miss if she continued with her travel plans. Boom went to Asia and upon her return, her boss told her how disappointed she was that she missed the launch and that she must not care about the company. Her wake up call was the realization she wanted to control her own time.

Boom trusts her gut and considers herself an intuitive leader.

Meditation is a leadership practice that is crucial to Boom, making her a better leader.

“Don’t go to University and start your business right away!”

Inspirational Quote

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Changing the world is the reason Daniel Bielak wakes up in the morning. A dynamic speaker and presenter, Daniel’s desire for change has led him to start the Youth Empowerment Podcast, and business danielbielak.com. On the podcast, he has interviewed some of the world’s greatest influencers, leaders and inspirational people.

With a passion for entrepreneurship, helping others and changing the world, don’t be surprised if he’s impacting one hundred thousand youth by the end of 2016, and one million within 3 years. Look out for him in 2035 when he is sworn into office and becomes Prime Minister of Canada.

A Woman Who Has Impacted You as a Leader

Daniel was born nine weeks premature, and diagnosed with asthma. He spent most of his childhood sick, due to his allergic reaction to the asthma medication he was prescribed. His mother took him to the Mayo clinic when she was tired of seeing her son suffer.

His Impact on Women as Leaders

Daniel’s initiative is to empower men to embrace their feminine aspects -- which he knows will, in turn, empower the females in their lives.

What He Sees That Holds Women Back

Daniel sees women challenged with the confidence to ask questions or to challenge an idea.

What He Has Learned From Women

Daniel is learning to be emotionally open and more vulnerable from the women he works with.

What Changes Are Necessary for Women to Step Up as Leaders

Daniel believes women can benefit from leadership classes, but internally leading their own lives towards their visions and goals before they attempt to lead a team, is a best practice. He says “find out who you are, and then drive your leadership towards it.”

What Are You Excited About

Daniel is excited about his podcast and about publishing the new “You Empower” magazine.

Hello everyone, and thank you for listening in to this bonus episode. Things are getting very exciting and very hectic around here as I put the finishing touches on my book and all the supporting materials that will go along with it.

I recently stopped referring to a “working title” and have said the title with confidence several times so I feel great to finally share it with you. The title of my book is, Accomplished: How to go from Dreaming to Doing.

To help promote the book I’ll be offering it for free for the first several days. If you want me to notify you when the book is live in Amazon send an email today to jodi@womentakingthelead.com and put “I want the book” in the subject line. You’ll get a grateful email from me the day the book is live and you’ll be able to snag a copy while the book is being offered for free.

This episode is a little bit longer than usual but I’ve got a story to share and this is actually an excerpt right from a chapter of the book and it starts with this quote from an unknown source:

“When the why is clear, the how is easy.” ~Unknown

When I was a young girl, I knew in my gut that God had put me on the Earth to do something special. I heard the bible stories, and I knew that, some day, I would have a dream in which God or an angel would speak to me and tell me what my special mission was.

These were the stories I grew up with. The Old Testament is full of them. God was constantly talking to people. I couldn't wait!

And then, as I got a little older, another element of these stories appeared. These stories didn't always have happy endings.

In fact, the ones who didn't die a horrible death usually didn't live a great life either. Poor Moses was kept out of The Promised Land after all he went through.

Being called on by God didn't seem so great anymore. I prayed one night for God NOT to call on me. I asked to live an ordinary life.

And for a time I had my way. My life was an ordinary life, and I did ordinary things. In college and throughout my 20s, I envied those people who knew exactly what they were meant to be doing. All the while, I still had this growing feeling in me that I was meant for more, that I should be doing more, and that I was throwing my life away to live an ordinary existence.

Jen Edds is a musician, and HBIC (Head Broad in Charge) at The Brassy Broadcasting Company. She believes that our voices are the most undervalued assets in our businesses, and an often overlooked superpower. Jen serves a diverse client base that includes coaches, healers, and other do-gooders. She is on a mission to get them in the ears, heads, and hearts of their audiences by helping them incorporate podcasts and other audio content into their platforms.

The common thread through her work, in both podcasting and music, is the desire to help others share their stories and voices.  In 2012, she quietly walked away from her comfort zone and a steady paycheck to live her passion and start The Brassy Broadcasting Co.

Playing Small Moment

Jen muses she played small for the first 39 years of her life but she acknowledges she needed a kick start to start singing. Her friend encouraged her to pick up the mic and broadened her horizons.

The Wake Up Call

Jen had an opportunity to play a ranch gig in front of people and other musicians she admired. The other musicians came up on stage did a few numbers which made Jen realize “Why not me?”

Style of Leadership

Jen’s goal is to help other people be successful and to a place where they don’t need her guidance. She plays roles ranging from hand holder, drill sergeant and cheerleader.

What Are You Excited About?

Jen is getting ready to launch Season 2 of the Brassy Broadcast! She decided to go out of her comfort zone and choose a subject on one thing she has never done.

Current Business Challenge

Jen is seeing more and more opportunities coming her way but she needs to filter them by factors such as where can she do the most good and where can she help the most people.

Your Support System

Jen is able to be successful because her wife supports her and encourages her to make the necessary changes required for her to be content. She also has a community of talented and supportive musicians surrounding her.

Leadership Practice

Jen has a morning ritual of meditation and journaling which helps her to become a better leader.

Libby Brockhoff launched her career as one of the founding partners, and namer, of Campaign’s “Agency of the Decade,” Mother London. She was 27 — and she hasn’t slowed down since. As one of the only female creative directors in the industry (women make up 3% of agency leadership), she’s crafted the advertising strategies for Silicon Valley tech giants like Facebook, Microsoft, and YouTube. She reframed the transgender narrative as the creative visionary behind Caitlyn Jenner’s coming out story. She helped activate Obama’s Arms Trade Treaty because she believed in it. And, she leads a dangerous team of equally passionate professionals at the AdAge’s “Small Agency of the Year” (and next “Agency of the Decade”), Odysseus Arms.

Playing Small Moment

Libby was supposed to quit her job and move with her husband to Los Angeles. Her boss told her shortly before she was scheduled to leave, he was starting an ad agency in the UK and she couldn’t leave. She feels her playing small moment was when she moved back to the US.

The Wake Up Call

Libby created the ‘Army of Moms’ to harness and return energy back to women. Her Aha moment was when she realized she could go back and pick up where she left off before leaving the workforce. She could follow her dreams and goals.

What Are You Excited About?

Libby is excited about a project she is working on with Facebook. The Facebook project focuses on the social media company giving back and reinvesting in their workforce.

Current Business Challenge

Libby says it is challenging to bring value to the creative work her company does.

Your Support System

Libby is surrounded by believers. Her husband wouldn’t let her quit, and helped to reignite her passion for her business, and other strong women are frequently reaching out to her, offering their support.

Leadership Practice

Libby says her special leadership practice is spending time with the people she works with.

Emily was a self-starter from the get-go and began her trajectory of being her own boss by owning a tanning salon in college –

no joke. From there, she started making and selling jewelry online which fueled her passion for online business as a whole. She

moved from designing jewelry to designing websites at Indie Shopography where her natural talent for coding, project management, and ability to use metrics to make calculated decisions has allowed her to continue to expand her reach and impact for online business owners ever since.

Emily uses that experience to share what she knows about building an online business on the Being Boss podcast, where she inspires, writes, and curates content to help creatives own their path and be more boss.

Playing Small Moment

When Emily moved her jewelry store off of Etsy and on to her own website she decided to sell web design to others interested in doing the same. Her playing small moment came when she undervalued her own work even when she knew it was worth more.

The Wake Up Call

Emily woke up one day and knew she had to do a podcast with her partner Kathleen. When a fairly large company contacted them about a sponsorship she realized the podcast was cultivating a community that was hungry for the information they provided.

Style of Leadership

Emily likes to keep things as transparent as possible and she refuses to ask someone to do something she would not do herself.

What Are You Excited About?

Emily is excited about re-launching the Being Boss Club House. It’s a result-focused, paid membership group for their ‘bosses’.

Current Business Challenge

Emily finds the daily grind of leading a seven-person team challenging. She is responsible for doling out tasks, keeping things organized and making the business run smoothly.

Your Support System

Emily has a six-person support team. There is Kathleen, who is Emily’s business partner at Being Boss.  Her baby daddy and money man makes sure people get paid, and a four-person team of people makes the website and podcast work.

Leadership Practice

Taking an interest in other people is one of the things that makes Emily a great leader.

Before I dive into the topic for today there’s something I want to underscore: we are all leaders and the first person we lead is ourselves. That’s why leadership development looks a lot like personal development – because it is. As you know yourself better and have better facility over leading and inspiring yourself, you will be better able to bring that to other people.

And before you know it you are having better conversations, attracting the type of people you want to be attracting into your business and your life and then getting the results that take you right to your goal, to your dream or vision…however you articulate it.

Everything you do to raise your own awareness will have a ripple effect on your life.

If at any time you feel like you need to really take this on and work with a coach directly don’t hesitate to reach out to me. It’s what I’m here for.

Okay, so we already got through our stress reactions and who we are not and we dove into finding out who we truly are. We’ve done the work to name our top 5 values and what our Superpowers are.

We’ve been talking a lot about strengths so let’s quickly talk about weaknesses. While our strengths come pretty naturally to us and don’t require tremendous effort, our weak areas take much more focus and attention from us and the finished product…let’s just say it’s good because it’s done.

Your weaknesses are the abilities that don't come naturally to you. When you force yourself to engage in tasks that call out your weaknesses it will drain your energy. And that’s why I refer to your weaknesses as your Kryptonite.

Is it worth expending a lot of energy improving your weaknesses? That is a topic long debated.

My opinion is that if it will benefit you to improve an area you are weak in then do it. If you're doing it as a hobby, great.

If you're expending a good chunk of your resources (time, money, energy) on trying to go from a 3 out of 10 to a 5 out of 10 I say outsource whatever that ability is for you and save your energy on activities that come naturally and have a greater impact for you and your business.

For instance, my weakness is technical details. I outsource any technical updates of my website and Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Could I spend an entire weekend or more learning how to do this myself? Sure. But I would hate it and I would be wiped out for the rest of the week.

I’ve also hired someone to edit my book. I’ve data-dumped everything I know into a document, adding in my personal experience with the concepts and arranging it all in a way that makes sense.

But going back and dealing with the details and minutia are not my strengths. It would be draining for me. I would quickly get distracted and soon I would find other things that need my attention, even though they are not more important!

Truth gets blurry when we are overcome by our kryptonite. Deadlines get missed and before we know it time has passed and we still haven’t accomplished out goal.

Figure out what your kryptonite is so you can minimize your exposure. Find those people who find strength around your kryptonite and let them work with it and vice versa. Working together is how we hit our goals and become more accomplished.

Head over to the post that accompanies this episode because I have a worksheet that will help you to reveal your Superpowers and your Kryptonite. You can find it at womentakingthelead.com/weaknesses/

You can always find more resources and other episodes to support you on your leadership journey at womentakingthelead.com.

I hope this was helpful to you and Here’s to Your Success!

Playing Small Moment

Bri’s playing small moment came just a few years ago when she realized she had not fully committed to her brand. She was waiting for a “white horse” to make her decision for her.

The Wake Up Call

Bri’s wake up call came when her day job cut her pay in half. She sifted through her notes from a conference she had attended the day before. Playing Small Moment

Shelli was a proven leader of technical teams. It took a couple of years before she decided to bypass him and get the word out on her own.

In the last episode we talked about identifying your core values so you could use them, almost like a compass set to your True North, with more awareness. Knowing your values and using them as a guide to make decisions will help you to be more peaceful and confident day-to-day.

In this episode I wanted to talk about other qualities you have, that you may not be fully aware of, that can also help you to find the success your looking for.

We are entering an era where success in business will be determined by the relationships we’ve built over time. As a leader, what does this mean for you? A lot.

Why Your Leadership Matters

Today, many employees consider the overall culture of an organization, the amount of freedom they’ll have in their position, and how they can contribute to and make an impact there.

Consumers aren’t basing their buying choices solely on cost. They’re researching more than ever before to find out what a brand really represents – its mission, values, and history.

Given this shift, strong leadership itself is a superpower. And our society is ever-obsessed with superhero figures.

When I was a child I wanted to be like Wonder Woman, She-Ra, and GI Jane.

In my years as a corporate leader I loved and was inspired by the then more recent superhero characters in Trinity from The Matrix, Lara Croft from Tomb Raider, and Michelle Yeoh's character from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

To me, these characters embodied strength, self-assurance and a willingness to take a different path. They endeavored for the greater good at great sacrifice to themselves.

They had superb fighting skills but used them judiciously and only when necessary.

Defining Your Leadership Superpowers

As a leader, take a moment to reflect on your own superpowers – those special qualities that make you shine in your role. Remember, virtually every professional interaction gives you the opportunity to build – or slowly destroy – your relationships.

Here are some qualities that come to mind when I think of leadership superpowers:

  1. Authenticity: You say what you mean, and mean what you say. You consider whether your actions are really aligned with your inner thoughts and feelings. You’re not afraid to speak up when something needs to be said.
  2. Reliability: Others can count on you. Sure, we all make mistakes from time to time – but you own up to your mistakes and work to make it right. Everyone knows you’re dependable and won’t jump ship when the going gets tough.
  3. Inspiration: You bring out the best in others, encouraging them to discover – and use – their own superpowers. People are motivated not only by your own unique strengths, but also by your ability to hone in on theirs.

Other superpowers I think of are: warmth, humor, being open to constructive feedback, sharing (within reason) your thoughts or personal stories, visionary thinking, listening, ability to plan effectively and to successfully re-route those plans when they don’t fall into place, willingness to commit, and a desire to give back to others.

Use Those Superpowers!

Just like your favorite superhero, use your superpowers to build quality relationships, lead your team, and inspire others – in business and in life.

And as any great superhero would, wield your powers to annihilate any quality that isn’t serving your highest good (we all have them!) – such as being overly judgmental, critical, or condescending, blaming others, being argumentative or continually wanting to prove your point, or even, being unresponsive.

And, (since you’re only human, after all) when you need a little inspiration of your own, just envision your favorite superhero, busting through all that evil and making everything alright again...

There are tools out there that are designed to help you get to know yourself better and identify your unique Superpowers:

  • DiSC
  • Myers Briggs
  • Strength finders
  • Fascination Advantage

There are many more indicators but these are the more popular ones and the ones I am most familiar with. If you have another you are more familiar with, take that one. The point is to seek clarity around what makes you tick so that you can use this knowledge to your advantage.

When I found out two of my strengths were enthusiasm and collaboration I was not completely surprised. Looking back on my career I could see how those traits helped me to stand out of the crowd.

However, having the awareness that these were the traits that had me stand out I can plan my business activities around these traits...and avoid situations where I am weakest.

How about you? Are there Superpowers you already know you have and are using regularly? Let me know by leaving a comment or message me directly.

Have an amazing week and here’s to your success!
